I half-expected to hear Paul Harvey at some point. He seemed to be the only voice on the radio in the middle of the country in the 1980s.

I was reading an article just today about a guy who got his catalytic converter stolen while parking at the airport. He told the reporter that there should at least be a sign warning of the possibility. I was thinking, "No, not more po

Billboards are depressing, especially in the countryside. It feels like a form of theft of my attention. They hurt everyone but a small group of people, but we still can't seem to ban them.

It seems to me that most people just want everything to be rational. It's just that the most idealogical on both sides are the ones that are always speaking.

Sure, but with every new hoop and restriction we tilt the scales further.

I guess I'm uncomfortable with adding all of these restrictions and hoops to hiring people. I worry that it is a death-by-a-thousand-cuts situation, and employers will be motivated to look to alternatives, like robots and offshore cent

I only read the first few paragraphs, but I guess they assume that someone has not played the game before? I'm continually surprised at how often we consider something to be domain-general common sense when it is in fact something doma

Wow, I actually had to vote on that and couldn't parse out what it was saying, so I left that one blank. I have a PhD, it's in computer science, but still.

I don't know. There's plenty of posts from my friends. I just don't see them because I'm not willing to wade through all of the junk ads and sponsored stuff.

A higher gas tax is an obvious approach for both safety and climate change. We could lower income tax a little to make up for it and add a supplement for those who can least afford it.

Well, we can at least say that one side in more sophisticated in how they present their truth, but I'm not sure that makes it any more truthful.

Isn't that kind of meta? Calling it the "both-sides-are-bad trope" is a trope used by one side to say they really are superior to the other. Having both sides believe this is kind of our whole problem right now in the US.

I guess it comes down to income tax (California) vs. property tax (Texas). You have to make a minimum income to pay income tax, and many people don't cross that threshold, or if they do not by much, so "most people" pay more

Yeah, my property taxes have gone up a lot in the last few years. I live in a suburb of Austin. They lower the tax rate occasionally, but not nearly enough to offset the rise in home valuations.

I wonder if this also relates to police officers. One of the problems seems to be that society doesn't have the right leverage over their behavior. Some are heroic and some give the profession a bad name.

As a father of 3 kids, one thing that gets lost in these discussions is the fact that some teachers are great and some are bad, like really bad. We need to give the good ones more money and freedom and the bad ones means and incentive to im

My concern is it seems we are no longer able to see big decisions in terms of tradeoffs. We say X is good but don't acknowledge the downsides. The other side says Y is good without doing the same.

One problem I've seen with Scratch is that schools rely on it for too long. Kids get into high school and the school is still teaching with Scratch.

The expense comes from the uncertainty. How do you know if you did everything exactly right? You have to hire an expert. This comes up in a lot of domains. People say just read document X, Y, and Z; but when you go to do that it's not

I don't know what a better manager is going to do in that kind of situation. You need a medical and mental health staff and a social worker.
