So you are saying that the pie is not grown by paying more, it's just that the workers are getting a bigger slice. Could be. That didn't seem to be the main point of the article, but that could also be true. I haven't looked

The thesis seems to be that businesses would pay more if they were smart enough to realize it was in their interests. Since they aren't, raising minimum wage seems to force them to pay more, which actually lowers labor costs because th

As far as I can tell, Google VertexAI prompt optimizer does similar things. I find their documentation more comprehensible. https://cloud.google.com/vertex-ai/generative-ai/docs/learn/...

I've gone down this rabbit hole a few times, and I always return pissed off and a dozen hours poorer. Maybe someday I'll get it.

I remember visiting California in the 1990s and was amazed to see my California friends waiting patiently at the light, looking at me like I was uncivilized because I just crossed the street whenever it was safe.

Could be. Or maybe drivers will get used to people popping up everywhere and will therefore drive with more concentration. I'm not sure, like you say, it will be interesting to see the data.

I still can't control my iPhone with my voice in the car. Siri doesn't work well for me. Maybe there is another way I have missed, but I'm amazed this functionality is still lacking.

My daughter was accused of turning in an essay written by AI because the school software at her online school said so. Her mom watched her write the essay. I thought it was common knowledge that it was impossible to tell whether text was ge

Agreed on the individual events, but the trend is pretty scary. My daughter went to pick out a pumpkin yesterday in Austin and it was 100 degrees. Christ.

I just made a podcast episode about my company where I work by giving it the website. It was surprisingly realistic. It also made me realize how empty many podcasts actually are. I sent it to my colleagues telling them I "had it produc

When MS Flight Simulator 2020 came out, I wrote a blog post about how these kinds of virtual worlds will be used to train our robot helpers. I'm looking forward to playing this new one. https://medium.com/@jmugan/m

Hybrids just seem like double the complexity. Maybe there are synergies that I don't know about. I wish we had higher gas taxes (we could lower other taxes to compensate).

He doesn't address the real question of how an LLM predicting the next token could exceed what humans have done. They mostly interpolate, so if the answer isn't to be found in an interpolation, the LLM can't generate somethin

I just watched Dark Waters on Netflix last night. Really good movie about DuPont and teflon. In the movie, people near the plant suffer disproportionally.

This is written for someone with a higher reading level than me. I skimmed the first few paragraphs and have no idea what it is about beyond the title.

In the US, I've been noticing that Montana has been really hot the last few summers. You wouldn't think that 100 degrees would be common way up there.

My worry is the noise pollution. I'm always surprised at how loud it is when a small airplane flies over.

If you compare this with the recent Apple add of crushing everything into a thin tablet, I can at least see the reasoning and the benefit. They should have seen it from other perspectives and changed it, but there is something smart there.

That's a cool comment, but I don't think the idea of nested simulations makes anything silly. It just means we have a lot of levels to climb and therefore a lot of potentially beautiful things to explore.

It's funny. When you first do work, you want the experiment to satisfy your hypothesis. When you are building on work, you also want the replication to succeed. But when it is a famous result like this, you actually want it to fail so

I was stuck overnight in Atlanta last week (before all of this) because they couldn't find a pilot. They had everyone sitting at the gate until 2am, when they finally gave up and rescheduled the flight for the next day.
