Not exactly the same, but https://www.endbasic.dev/ tries to achieve precisely that: a REPL with built in graphics for learning purposes, albeit with BASIC instead of asm.

Really liked the article. One thing I'd add (and that I wrote about before here: https://jmmv.dev/2021/07/principal-engineers-oncall.html ) is that high-level engineers should be on-call. These engineers (alon

Crashing is fine if you are dealing with trusted input. But in the post, parameter validation was just an example. I've seen plenty of code using init methods to create network connections and the like -- and in those cases, you need p

I usually blog about engineering topics on my personal blog, and at some point last year, I wrote a review of which posts seem to work better than others. Here is what I found in my specific case: https://jmmv.dev/2020/

Good article. Just wanted to point out https://jmmv.dev/2021/08/useless-use-of-gnu.html , which also covers the portability problems that GNU has widely introduced and describes alternatives to the common issues.

Oh thanks. I wasn't aware of that article nor that Varnish did exactly this :) Updated the text of my post to incorporate it. And when I said performance would suffer, I was not implying it'd be terrible. I was trying to say that

Sure, but the kernel has no concept of arguments: all it sees is a plain string. PowerShell can do things better as long as you stay within its domain, but things break down when you talk to other binaries. Touched upon that here https:&#x

I also wonder if the existence of these APIs has something to do with DOS and Windows, where the command line is actually a single string and quoting is a nightmare. I wrote a little bit about this related issue here: https://jmm

Adding buttons to the UI is an alternative indeed, but so far I've resisted to add anything outside of the terminal. Once I let the environment "spill" outside of the terminal emulator, it'll be hard to draw the line on

They indeed are. As I keep referring to the Locomotive BASIC manual and the QuickBASIC builtin help to implement my version, I'm amazed at how many features those had. Especially the latter was a great IDE even when compared to today&#

That'd be nice indeed. As part of the 0.5 release I have just published, I split the language core from the standard library to ensure the former remains as small as possible. So far, it's at 2,500 lines of non-test code and about
