I wonder if something more like a smooth probability map would make more sense, rather than overlapping borders. The hard lines can give an unreasonable sense of certainty, even if the intent is to indicate uncertainty.

I'm not so sure. Reddit skews young, yet the narrative there is that TikTok and the Chinese gov are just shy of evil. The iOS clipboard bug in particular has startled reddit into a wave of self-reinforcing "TikTok is spyware"

All that may be true, yet it still does not mean rationality should be thrown out the window when evaluating claims about TikTok.

Made a (very) brief scan of the filing. The notable personal information mentioned: phone/social network contacts, MAC, IMEI, IMSI, device serial #, browsing history, cookies, "metadata", location. Pretty par for the course.

The way I understood that passage, soldiers were expecting to lose around 30% of their flour in the deal, but some bakers figured out they could take a larger cut by adding more water. That doesn't necessarily mean the practice of taki

My objection is that it's no longer clear if you're dealing with content addressing or server addressing. If I see example.com in the URL bar, is it a server pointed from the DNS record example.com (a CDN that server tells me to v

Amusingly, given the starting point for this discussion, what you've described part of how the "OK" sign became associated with racism. In 2017, someone on 4chan's /pol/ board suggested "Operation O-KKK&qu

As I understand, it is closed-source code causing the problem described. Erran Berger linked to that Hakawai commit as an example of a different, open-source project under the LinkedIn umbrella that has the same problem.

HN has been oddly eager about conspiracy theories over the last year. That Navy UFO story (and various other articles from The Drive) got more play than I would have expected. More recently, the TikTok "reveal" from a reddit comme

You are correct about the 'quote', as it does not seem Gebru ever wrote that. I am surprised none of these sibling comments have affirmed that. While personally I presume that parent poster meant the 'quote' only as an i

I don't think they're off the mark with linking the reckless exuberance about this post to anti-China sentiment. Distrust and outright hostility has grown substantially over the past 18 months, particularly on reddit. It's a

That article is incorrect; their guess of equivalent GPUs was about $5600 too high. The FirePro D700 used in the Mac Pro was essentially a rebadged consumer card. (It's surprising, but none of the GPUs in the Mac Pro officially support

You're free to disagree with the author, but this: >Now you learned that and you can delete your article. is just rudely dismissive, and not part of good-faith debate.

Be careful reading this graph. The x-axis is "share of total deaths, %", but these are relative measures, not absolute ones. One way for the US to match the other countries would be to intentionally kill a bunch of old people. A

You're confusing megabits with megabytes. The correct number for your example is 162 GB per day. For reference, a 4K Blu-ray runs about 100 Mbit/s, and requires 1.08 TB for 24 hours of content. (395 TB for a year.) Netflix streams

This is quite wild. Is there any finer-grained summary of the sort of data leaked, and how extensive it is? Even a million documents could be anything from mundane to incredibly sensitive, depending on the sort of content.
