Anyone who's done an engineering course will have heard about the metal fatigue in the Comet's overhead windows. What I didn't know was the comet originally was supposed to be equipped with rockets for take-off on short runways, and at hi

Wow, that was truly awful. But I did learn something: the word "habitually" should never be used in speech, unless you want to encourage your listeners to think of the word "bitch".

There's been a bit of debate lately amongst a few Australian bloggers about how Twitter is viewed by marketers as just another place where they must impose themselves, to shout their message. Not a damned consideration that we might not wan

Aside from the content, the presentation of this post deserves praise - it has to be one of the clearest presentations of data I've ever seen on the web. The text is concise and the graphs and other supporting graphics are unambiguous. Top

Another good venue is the Silicon Beach drinks - every Friday at 5pm at Bar 77 in the Grace Hotel on York St. 2-for-1 drinks , and you usually get a good cross-section of the Sydney start-up "scene" there. (I hesitate to call it a start-up

I've seen Google Wave in action at a BarCamp here in Sydney, and while it seems ripe with technical possibilities, I think the bigger challenges by far with its adoption will be social and cultural. With email, there already existed norms w

Perhaps it's unfortunate that the media even thinks that these conspiracy theorists even need to be debunked. They wouldn't waste the column-inches (or whatever the online equivalent is) debunking claims from people who think the earth flat

I now no longer even read the title when I see a "steveblank.com" url - I just click it, because I _know_ it's going to be good, and just overflowing with honest-to-goodness Wisdom (with a capital W). Not sure if Steve reads here, but I wan

Short summary: if your business promises large returns, and requires lots of start-up capital, seek VC; if your business has not-so-large returns, and doesn't require lots of capital, boot-strap. Duh.

Leaving aside how technically feasible this is (and I suspect you'll have a hard time miniturising the electronics enough to fit the form factor of the ring), it's not a bad idea. The only issue I'd have with it would be that it's not quite

Actually, you can read Anderson's book "Free" online at: http://www.scribd.com/doc/17135767/FREE-full-book-by-Chris-A... (He explicitly mentions in the book that he's giving it away for free, so this is legit.)

Spoofed is probably the wrong word - through an irrelevant IP address is a better way to put it(perhaps someone's compromised computer on a botnet acting as a proxy).

I just had a browse through my auth.log, and there does seem to be a new sort of automated attack script in the wild - it opens a connection to SSH port 22, (through some spoofed IP address), but then disconnects before attempting to login.

The title is misleading - Luna 15 has long been known about, and it didn't land on the moon before the Americans, but in fact a few hours after they landed (as both the telegraph article and the Wikipedia entry on Luna 15 show). http://en.

Potion, _why's experimental language. It's cool to play with something bleeding edge, though something about the language itself makes it feel like Python. Maybe the use of colons to define functions/blocks.

There's plenty of very expensive software - for example some of the really high end engineering packages I've used, for things like 3D modelling and fluid simulation, can sell for upwards of $5K per _seat_. But again, the value this softwar

The thing to remember, is that unless you have _actually_ proven that people want to use it, and are doing so, then any value that might be attached to the software is hypothetical. If an investor had $100k, they could put it in the bank, a

The examples that 37 signals are relying on are ones where there is already the opportunity to outsource business processes - order fulfilment to Amazon etc. This is all well and good where you're doing something which is not too different
