I used to read the AV Club’s reviews, but honestly the quality has gone way downhill there recently. Now I follow A.A. Dowd (one of the AV club’s former reviewers) plus a bunch of other people on Letterboxd, which is pretty much a social ne

There have been plenty of great, original movies post-2010 that push filmmaking in some way, they’re just overshadowed by the marvels of the world. Some of my recent favorites: Tar Sorry to Bother You Uncut Gems Get Out Tangerine/The F

Why are unrealistic preferences a problem for anyone but the person with the unrealistic preferences? The only way someone else’s standards become a problem for you is when you feel entitled to that person’s attraction (“I’m a 7 and she’s a

That’s a better answer imo. Weird to talk about pig eggs as if they exist even though it seems to know that pigs don’t lay eggs.

There are trade offs to either. Your “good values” probably work out well for the majority, and are very punishing to some minority. Mormons have strict social rules that work well a lot of the time, but hurt people who fall outside the maj

You’re right I’m not thinking of something super objective (I’m also not particularly interested in an objective measure of what’s good for society), but here are a few ways the ADA makes society better: 1. More people are able to contribut

My point was that helping some minority often does help society as a whole. The ADA, strictly speaking, only helps those with disabilities. But guess what? Having people with disabilities be able to access goods, services, and work just lik

Yes. Edit: to be less snarky, there are plenty of examples of doing something inefficient for the benefit of society as a whole. The New Deal and the ADA are two examples that come to mind. Unfortunately, we don’t do much of that anymore in

Forming a union isn’t a platitude, it’s direct action. In a culture as union-hostile as the modern day US, every new union is a win for the labor movement. I can speak from experience that leftist groups who otherwise hate the tech industry

You sound very in your own head about this. I wonder if things you’ve read online from HN/Reddit are coloring your perception of your in-person interactions. I encourage you to stop homogenizing 50% of the population because of some ge

I think what the replies to your comment (including myself) are missing is: how does this make things work worse? You say it introduces an obvious problem in your comment but don’t say what that obvious problem is. It’s not obvious to me.

Your first point is the only one that stands for non-straight porn. 2 and 3 don’t apply to gay porn for obvious reasons. Point 4 probably has more to do with your proximity to sex workers than anything. I have plenty of friends that make th

The question is not “how could a social network like Facebook have done any better given small tweaks to content moderation?” It’s “is Facebook fundamentally designed to create these kinds of misinformation bubbles?” That second question is

Wealth disparity is important, because it also means power disparity. I hear people who are pro-capitalism say “the poorest people in the US have it better than kings did 500 years ago”, which is only true if you’re considering the stuff th

I have this same thing, but I’m pretty sure it’s just heartburn. Omeprazole 40mg daily maybe made it a little better, but the different was subtle. What actually cleared it up for me semi-permanently was quitting a stressful job.
