I'm surprised the sibling comments have had a good experience. I currently drive a former rental and there were so many issues early on, especially with the transmission. Anecdotally my friends have had similar experiences with ex rent

This has proven true for a while now. My favorite example is Slack. Slack is solid software, but why do we need upwards of 300MB of memory usage to send text and a couple images. I know why, but it does seem like an unreasonable usage. Here

Just spit balling here: some sites like Twitter have their own emoji sets and I wonder if they're saying that they don't do that and instead rely on the OS's normal rendering of emojis.

Came here to post this. Great book and it's got so much heart. Brian is obviously a great writer and has a lot of great stories about the Bell Labs days. Early UNIX just seems like a dream to have been around. It's a very human fo

Looking at the No Starch Press book: 1616 pages and 88 chapters. Something tells me that I don't know TCP/IP as well as I thought I did...

The last two-ish years have been insane for Python performance. Something clicked with the core team and they obviously made this a serious goal of theirs and the last few years have been incredible to see.

Pretty much any queue and a compute will do. SQS paired with lambda an event bridge (I forget if that's the service to trigger the lambda or not) would be solid. I lean towards compute that's a bit easier to run in different setti

Ah, cost is the amount to produce and price is the amount to consume then? I never actively tagged those ideas with distinct words, but I appreciate the insight.

For a 10 year bet, that's a fair point. Tangentially, over the course of an individual investor's working years, I think this shows that the S&P 500 is pretty good, if paired with appropriate bond allocation as your move towar

"Common sense" can be subjective here, but Bogle was preaching index funds for quite some time leading up to this. Vanguard and other low cost index providers were doing well, but it is true that it's increased quite a bit ov

I may be wrong, but Kindle samples are often much shorter than 50 pages in my experience. Usually too short for me to make a choice as to whether I want to read the book or not.

I don't think it's pedantic to correct a number that is sixty times off. That's absurd. If they said 800k, then sure. 40 million is absurdly off and should be commented about to prevent others from running with that absurdity
