I look at electric scooters vs gas scooters in Asia as a template. At some point in the past 5-7 years, they just took off, and seem to have crushed gas scooters in a matter of years (at least where I’ve traveled). There was some inflection

Does Amazon have an incentive to offer FDE, or is it just a support burden for them? I ask, without much cynicism. How many of their customers will care? Will this lead to a PR problem for them? My guesses are few, and probably not. Meanwhi

So my mac laptop draws into 5120x2880 buffer, then scales that down to 4k to display on my external 4k monitor. It’s also still driving the internal retina display with a different scaling. External GPU helps.

The title doesn’t seem to totally match the content of what SeaWorld has said. There are some open questions about what the announcement actually means, but it’s possible they’re just changing the show in San Diego somehow… they don’t actua

I care so much less about the data model. Document or Relational: I can see different apps preferring one or the other. Two things are interesting to me: 1. What's the consistency model? Is NoSQL really NoTxns? Whether you need transac

I think it really depends on the product. Determinism has been a big issue with logical logs in many systems, but it’s only a problem if you don’t plan and test for it. If you’re interested in how VoltDB ensures and tests determinism, check

What's disappointing to me about his weak-sauce punishment, is that Berkeley is the kind of place that could actually weather a loss of a guy like that.

Yeah, not your point, but it's a question for me. If the machine has drivers for the windows kernel, and probably terrible drivers for linux, how thin can that shim get?

I think this is really interesting as the gap between casual browsing and more intense stuff like running my unit test suite on the software I'm developing has such noticeable effects on battery life. With all the low power states and

I wonder how hard it would be to just virtualize linux all the time, rather than trying to load linux on new hardware. How much do you lose as the tech to virtualize gets better?

It depends on a lot of things: power source, location, etc… But it’s certainly easier to monitor a few thousand smokestacks than 200 million cars.

It honestly sounds cheaper just to subject these cars to randomized spot testing than to expect people to review this code all that well. Reviewing code is expensive in either time or money, and a lot of this code exists in the world.
