Wait... they have Nginx out front passing requests to HAProxy and THEN to Apache + mod_rails? That just seems like a bit much given that mod_rails can be installed with Nginx straight up. Why would you want a set up like this?

I think you're missing the point. The people that are likely to use this application for articles are likely the kind of people that either (a) regularly visit your site, (b) are new to your site but presently don't have time to read the co

Not only that but it looks incredibly underwhelming. It looks and smells so much like Java that you might as well use Java.

Interesting point. I tend to agree with you. I find myself hesitant about putting my business logic essentially on the front-end. With the current model we can hide some of the "secret sauce" that makes our applications unique on the server

It doesn't actually say Github is moving. It just says that Github isn't going to be supported by EngineYard in the same way. It's entirely feasible that Github remain at EngineYard. Edit Woops. Looks like I missed the key part of a sente

Relatedly, and I mean this question with the utmost sincerity, what is an MBA exactly good for? Far too many people I know are dismissive of MBAs and their degree ("Master in Bullshit Administration! Hur hur hur"), but this same crowd tends

Not really. A Git repo isn't really beholden to any other repo. Some are considered definitive, but truly they can all stand on equal footing.

I strongly considered using MongoDB for an internal project at work. I eschewed it for my project though. I simply didn't have time to fully investigate it. I looked at using John Nunemaker's MongoMapper library to integrate MongoDB into my

Quick question to my fellow Rubyists who happen to do Rails: would you really resent working with Zed? I've enjoyed Zed the few times I've met him in person and find the prospect of working with him to be a desirable thing.

It's not just you. I think tablets are a over-hyped idea. I think we'll see things like mobile phones take their place. I do, however, see natural input (such as writing and drawing) making their way on to notebook computers.

Agreed. My thoughts were more or less along the lines of developer mind-share. Though MS has some interesting things, the vast majority of developers producing the cool things are leaving MS in their past. OS X and Linux, on the other hand,

This is interesting, but I feel like it's half an article. The author gets to the point of noting that the experiment was flawed before, states new facts about Asparagus pee odour, but doesn't state the old numbers, nor why this disparity e

Sometimes I arrange to have an outlet. During my last break up I called my mom a lot when I absolutely couldn't focus. I talked to her for 5 or so minutes on my break to vent a bit. I found that after a little bit of releasing the mental pr

It's more common in a server environment. I'd expect to see more Java installs as the popularity of JVM-based language implementations rise, such as JRuby, Clojure, and Scala. I am, for instance, working on putting together a JRuby stack fo

"Stupid people" is a bit harsh and not very accurate. It's more accurate to say that we need more quick answer guides for the less experienced. We were all there at one point in time.

I've been wondering about Django as a MS Access replacement as of late. I currently use either Rails or Sinatra, but Ruby has one major flaw as an MS Access replacement: it has lousy _native_ libraries for generating MS Excel files. You can
