I would also want to be sure that someone else couldn't order something to my room. You'd need some sort of one-time use code/key or something, and then the friction gets even higher.

So I'm an iPhone user as well, and what he said is correct. The phone normally displays LTE when full LTE service is available. In my experience. when you're in a normal LTE area, the 4G display usually indicates a really bad sign

Yeah, I think we're now in the era of curators. Since it's much harder to find good books in a particular niche, it would be really nice to find a good trusted curator to weed through.

The unfamiliar directory structure was always an issue, but even worse was using ftp on windows, which defaulted the transfer mode to ASCII, so if you forgot to change it, you'd end up with corrupt files most of the time.

I feel like weekend voting would help for those who work "regular 9-5 jobs" but those who are young, and say still in college/university and working weekends, would now have a more difficult time voting. The weekend type jobs

I remember those! Here in the US in the 80's they used to be at the "educational" toy stores in shopping malls across the country. I always thought they were really cool, but my parents never bought me one.

I saw what looked like this sort of thing with my daughter. She struggled in her high-school algebra 1 class, but whenever I would sit down with her and she would work out problems, she had no trouble (but she also had no confidence that sh

I agree completely. People often put this burden on themselves "we must ship and make money" when there is much more enjoyment out of just working on stuff when you feel like it. Learning new things like art, music, game design an

I always find it sad, and kind of ridiculous, when indie game developers quit everything and live on no money for years trying to make the next big thing. Making indie games should be about doing something because you love it. Keep a day jo

I did a search on Bob Russel and found a wiki article entitled "Robert Russell (Programmierer)" I was hoping this was a joke on his bad spelling, but then I realized the article was in German. Oh well.

Not only is it a nice and inexpensive place to live, but the traffic situation is cake. A very bad day is a 45 minute commute. (ABQ resident here)

I remember some dial-up ISPs doing almost this a few years ago. A friend of mine lived in a rural area, and his dialup provider would show a low-res version of the image. If he clicked on the image, it would load the full version. I think t

I was (briefly) part of a BBS "movie" group that made movies using "Commodore 64 Graphics" which were actually just made using the C64's unique character set. It would record back every cursor movement and character

I had some old 3.5" floppies I tried to read recently. Unfortunately it seems that they didn't survive the long dark in my parents' closet, and were unreadable, at least by consumer hardware... maybe a data recovery service c

This sounds amazing, but it also kind of scares me. How do you enforce your employment agreement so that they don't just eventually increase your work week to 5 days and keep you at the same lower salary?

If you're interested in GPU ray tracing, I played with nVidia's OptiX a few years. It was a fun (and pretty easy, IIRC) way to do it on a GPU (nVidia anyway). https://developer.nvidia.com/optix
