I have been a waiter actually, in college. I had no qualifications. I also wasn't very good at it. I did work at a 'Chili's'-type restaurant, not a nice place where the waiters would be more experienced obviously. I do realize that it's

Not sure what the comparison is with waiters. A lot of waiters are in their teens or early twenties and it's already one of the highest paying jobs for that group without requiring any real qualifications. Restaurants, on the other hand,

Upvote for that. There are a lot of brilliant people on HN but they seem to forget that to a large degree they are in the right place at the right time. You have a great career because you work in a field that is in very high demand at th

Is there some kind of widespread anger at truck drivers? I've always found them to be the safest drivers on the road personally. Obviously their livelihood depends on their driving record so this is no real surprise.

I do consulting and have been in many offices of large corporations in NYC, and I have not seen IE6 on a corporate PC in maybe 5 years. Macs on the other hand are practically neck-and-neck with PCs from what I have seen. My image of an IE6

Speaking as somehow who's rather naive, it would seem logical to me that given the significant U.S. interest in Chinese monitary policy and China's significant interest in our debt policy, some reciprocity would be in order.

No doubt the world needs Steve jobs more than it needs one more nice guy selling life insurance. But Plenty of people have accomplished more than Steve jobs (gasp!) while still treating other people with a minimal level of respect. You do

I think it would be extremely easy to find. The only reason anyone ever buys a suit in the first place is to go on an interview for a ('real') job or attend a wedding.

Honestly I would have no idea whether that was a joke or not, about cutting the line. I would probably laugh if he said that to me because it's a safer response, Mark went the other direction. I'd like to hear a better example of these so

It's not the total opposite. This article is saying that the top AND the bottom of society are both very stressful, and those right below the top are in the least stressful position. Personally, this does jive with my experience in human

What exactly is the definition of "broke"? Declaring bankruptcy and having your house foreclosed doesn't mean you're broke like a homeless person is broke.

I'm sure it's partially the B&W but it's amazing how old this looks. Without thinking too much about the cars I would probably have been at least 15 years off to guess when it was.

Here's a myth held by introverts. Introverts (rightly) believe that extroverts don't understand them, but they don't understand extroverts as well as they think they do. Case in point, the commonly held belief on HN that extroverts mostly
