This is tangentially related, but when I lived in Palo Alto I'd walk past the Permuto ("The Shopper Connect Network") offices every day (the corner of College Ave and Staunton Ct) and always wondered what they did, exactly. Some sort of B2B

I was all, "Hey, interesting story." Then I was all, "I wonder who wrote it?" Now I'm all "!!!". The world that might have been. Do you ever think it would have been better if you had gotten fired?

I was at a wedding two weeks ago, filled with non-technical, non-Silicon Valley folks and in one of the songs before the wedding they ad-libbed in the word "tweet" for "call" or "write" or some other verb. Everyone in the audience got the j

No, that's not right. Cantor's argument says that it's impossible to create a bijection between the rationals and the irrationals. It does this by considering an arbitrary bijection and then showing there is at least one irrational not in

"one to one" typically means injective (into). That is, every element in the image corresponds to a unique element from the domain. That's just a convention, though. To be precise one ought to use terms like injection, surjection, and bij

When these articles say "losing millions of users" they mean losing millions of active users, which in the case of Facebook is the sum of all new and returning users over a given time period. They're not talking about registered users. Losi

I'm going to toot my own horn, here. Almost three years ago to the day I wrote an article outlining what Digg should do in light of the launch of the Facebook Platform: 1. Digg should become the default way people like and share things on

I agree the "average debt" is a silly, but I assumed "25% have no savings at all" (note: it does not say "25% of people") meant "25% of working Americans," a continuation of the line item right above it.

That's a symptom, not a cause. MySpace saw Facebook coming. I remember a quote from Rupert Murdoch in 2006-2007 saying that MySpace was losing to Facebook. There are a million ways they could have used their position to crush Facebook, bu

Groupon and other deal-a-day coupon sites spend tons of money on Facebook ads. Since Greg (hi Greg!) works at Facebook, it'd be a gross breach of trust for him to reveal who Facebook's ad clients are. Zynga is a well-known example, often m

It sounds like Bootup Labs wasn't able to draw down on some of their LPs. So, it's not nefarious, but it would make me think twice before accepting (the promise of) money from Bootup Labs. It ain't real 'till the money's in the bank.
