In my opinion, I wouldn't call what you describe "ambition", but rather "need for self-validation". Ambition is desire and determination of achieving something, whereas challenge, pressure and responsibility just se

Well, I'm clearly misinformed. I thought that maybe my source meant the relative size of non-public shares, but even then it's ca. 49% employee ownership. Yeah, sorry for that. I stand corrected.

I think this is dependent on the age of the company. Last one I've looked at was SocGen - an old French bank. 90% of their shares are owned by employees and I think somewhere around 7% by executives. I can easily imagine that a just IP

Usually most of them are common (i.e. voting shares). What has a potential to get exploited isn't the fact that people can't cast their vote, but that: - they can't (or don't care to) coordinate themselves - don't h

There were a lot of problems with the USSR. If we look at it only from an economic point of view, then it failed because planned economy is broken by design.

The most deliciously ironic thing is that the main Marx's grief with capitalism - the fact that the workers didn't own the means of production (or "capital") - was rectified exactly by the modern financial capitalism tod

Which is even more cut throat, since you're basically selling political power: rich people would be able to afford way more, than the poor.

That's not the point. Any kind of contractual obligation isn't exactly freedom. The point is, that the comparison is still bad.

The point sz4kerto is making, as I understand it, is that the staff cost just jumped for these companies, meaning that some companies might seek to freeze any new hires or even lay off some workers.

I'm not sure I get your point. Although writing your own video codec seems a bit overkill. The spec here isn't that trivial, I mean the thing has clearly strict performance and portability constraints across systems and compilers,
