It was a blanket ban on all VPNs. Their exact statement said: "We are writing to notify that your application will be removed from the China App Store because it includes content that is illegal in China..."

Apple's stand on privacy is quite flexible at the top of the pyramid - for example in China they were happy to axe hundreds of VPN apps which were allowing people in HK and mainland China access to content without risking being thrown

I have been using an Apple TV and a Chromecast for a long time. I've never seen an ad on the Chromecast - it simply plays a stream as instructed by an app on the phone. Is it different with the Fire Stick?

Google's withdrawal from China in 2010 stands out as perhaps the most eminently courageous move a technology mega-corp has made against a powerful nation state. The tragedy is that the world didn't care - signaling perhaps to all

If you're seeing many people building the same thing, it's probably because there's a need that you might have overlooked. Here's one: people want to share formatted snippets on Twitter. They often post a link to the cod

The domestic narrative in China is that the virus is of foreign origin, with the CCP press strongly suggesting that it's of US origin - eg:[1]. The truth probably is that they know it originated (from animals) in China, and don't

That depends. Most countries have ratified the biological weapons treaty. If proven to be lab created, the onus will be on them/whoever to prove that this was not part of a weaponization effort. Not to mention, instant loss of goodwill

Javas FQDN model is actually pretty bad in practice. Domain names change quite often (I've seen many packages with a dead FQDN), and relying on the TXT record is going to be a security nightmare even worse than the username/passwo

NYT is glaringly inaccurate if you're closer to the source of the news. Not merely a bias or a cherry picking of the data, but just really shallow research. From a distance though, most articles will seem well-researched (even if opin

I cannot find if project-scoped access tokens (which was a Bronze+ feature) are available in the Free tier, or whether they require Silver. It's such a glaring omission on GitHub - which only has personal access tokens which give apps

There's a good quote on that thread which captures what AWS is doing with products like ElasticSearch: "My argument is that AWS is eating seed grain, on its supply side, and doesn't know it."

There is no meaningful way for an independent vendor to compete with a Cloud Provider offering the same service. It gets bundled in the initial sales pitch, promoted in their documentation and at events, and gets heavily discounted. It simp

Re-rendering for state changes is a fairly easy thing to do, if you're willing to accept something like useState/setState. It can even be done application-side (without help from the lib). Basically, just wrap all state changes in

You're right - and I love what you said here. Backbone has been a huge influence for me. I liked everything being explicit, and the whole mechanism of your app working just as you designed it, without deviation.
