Thanks for all the replies. Sorry I'm a bit late responding. So, there are options, some I now remember hearing of before. I'm still interested in more of you thoughts on why they don't have a wider adoption rate.

So, first, congrats on launching your product. :) Personally, I don't have a need for it, and if I did, I'd be very reluctant to use a proprietary service, but I'm sure there are companies out there who will be happy to use y

I'd like to see some of the stores become actual showrooms. You go in, get to handle the actual product. Then, if you decide to buy, do it there via the stores affiliate link. If not, you pay the store $N on your way out. That way the

My parents homeschooled me. They used phonics to teach me to read, and they didn't make me learn to read before I was actually ready. Those two things, plus lots of being read too, had me reading so much growing up, they had to limit m

Exactly. Minimum wage jobs should be jobs that require little skill. They should be easy to train people for, and employers should expect a high turn over rate as their employees find better jobs. Unfortunately, that is not how things work

> This is a category error. Companies have an existential incentive to chase profits (and their managers can be sued by the shareholders for doing anything less). Their incentive to avoid violating laws, morals, and ethics is far lower.

Have not read the article, but every time I've heard about it my thought is, "make it not connected to the internet." Basically, keep the data local, then you can choose to take to your doctor, or find a way to analyze it you

It makes me wonder, how could we rebuild things? It's not a tooling problem. There are several high quality forum tools out there. Discourse being one of them. But getting people to actually participate seems impossible. I've had

I have never understood the appeal of Twitter. (Or short Facebook/G+ status update type content) I mean, what is so great about seeing lots of really short posts? You can't say anything truly meaningful. It's just a bunch of

Heh. I remember the days before blogs. Everyone posted on community forums. You'd get some amazing, long, and lasting conversations that way. Then everyone who posted in the forums started blogging, and I saw the forums dry up. Sure, p

To be a bit contrarian, it puts the url at the top, that makes it a lot easier to tell if the result is a spam site, or an official site. Ads are easily discernible because they have an icon that says 'Ad'. I like it.

I'd argue that the "pre-cloud" era is still going strong. And that is a good thing. My workplace has it's own data center. There are some downsides, but I prefer it. So username+password really is needed. And should be i

So, after some thought, here's why I don't consider it pointless to have basic auth built in. It would keep ES from being completely open. If you wanted to get in, you'd have to comprise some part of the network that would le

The basic license is free now, so you can get basic authentication. But I still wonder why that isn't part of the open source version, and why it isn't turned on by default....

I've been using ES off and on since before 1.0 came out. It has always baffled me that ES doesn't require a username and password by default. ES is a database that has to exist on a network to be usable. Heck, it expects that you

It took some work, but I convinced my employer to spring for a Darter Pro. I'm pretty happy with it. My previous laptop was a 2016 Dell XPS 13. I've found the larger screen on my Darter to be a lot easier to work on. Though, I do
