Right now, Generation X just wants a beer and to be left alone. It just wants to sit here quietly and think for a minute. Can you just do that, okay? It knows that you are so very special and so very numerous, but can you just le

Hate to be a bother, but as someone curious about getting into copywriting I wonder if you'd mind trading a few emails with me? No pressure, obviously. And I know you've got a lot going on right now, just, if you get the time.

The company I'd like to know about is Woot.com; they need to pay their writers by the truckload. I hit that site every day.

I wonder. If hourly labor was more closely monitored and people who were paid hourly were compensated for the tike they put in... What would that look like in the market? People sent home, new people hired, or at least people fairly paid fo

In addition to the accounting if Anonymous' role in things, this dabbles in a good accounting of the movement that was bubbling from many different places. Good article.

On a more serious note, I'd love to find out more about just how much weight they think this tech could support in the future. Those implications could be insane.

I can absolutely understand what you're saying. I don't have so much of a problem with having the same name I chose in 1996, at the age of 16, though. (That's what I meant by "I'm not sure what that says about me.") And actually, my problem

He talks about that in the video (linked elsewhere in this thread, on YouTube.) It's used to keep out the more casual trolls. But on the site itself, you're not required to reveal your identity.

Only reading the 118 page thesis' abstract? Probably not. Kudos to her for writing it, and you linking it; I've saved it for the weekend. But my point wasn't that "it's an original thought that he's had and no one has ever considered it bef

Ahhh, thanks for the link! "It took me four hours to pick my AOL screenname." Same here. And I've been using it ever since. I'm not sure what, if anything, that says about me. But yeah, it's the name I've chosen to associate with.

As someone who, until recently, worked at a local news TV station, it was downright embarrassing the vocal minority of people who are actively spewing their hate. We even had a few people who regularly would write in to race-bait black repo

Actually they do disallow tripcodes on /soc/, which is hilarious. Doubly funny though, is how people there still use the name field, and rarely troll with it. The honor system largely works.

Er, they obviously didn't want his name associated with the post, though I agree it's a good one. Maybe replace it with "An HN user posted this, ..."? Just as a kindness to them?

We present ourselves differently in different contexts, and that's key to our creativity and self-expression. "It's not 'who you share with,' it's 'who you share as,'" Poole told us. "Identity is prismatic." moot just kinda bl

A refreshing about-face from where I thought he was going to go with it. I don't see people out protesting Apple or Google. I think people see those companies as offering opportunity and reward. In fact, I'll go this far: Reward = Work * Op

I was saddened when Carmack mentioned at QuakeCon that there were no plans to give QuakeLive.com the love it so obviously needs. Being so skill-based (as opposed to loot based) though, it really does seem to lack the appeal other games have

Games should be about story the same way a painting should be about story. Gameplay mechanics are the paints, and should be applied with intent for best results. Sure, some abstract painting is great. Tetris is as well. But that's not the n
