Interesting, and I agree that more and more YC clones are coming from outside the Valley. I guess the question is if the city/region has enough expertise to make a clone successful. Perhaps if focused on a more vertical field it has a bet

Interesting... particularly as it's probably easier to build sufficient expertise in a vertical outside the normal geographies. The question to me is how many of these kinds of startups need seed-level funding versus proper VC funding? I

I would love to be able to verify that, though I agree it looks to be true. My dream would to get a fairly comprehensive list of startups to come from all of the different programs, and see which of those are a) still in business, b) rec

Exactly. I'm hoping to write a generalized framework to help guide others in what's important and what's not, and how to adapt it to specific goals!

I didn't realize AlphaLab and DreamIt are funded by the state. But as part of my project I hope to recognize the different types of funding sources & people that are starting YC clones. I've even heard about companies that are looking

My instinct is that I agree. But YC seems to be the top-tier choice for companies applying to the whole group of incubator-type programs. Is that because YC is seen as a better/bigger step toward connections and further investment?

Since nearly the very beginning of Google proper (aka, not BackRub) they've had a separate search for government sites and for Linux. And also Universities... I vaguely remember both a University of Michigan and a Stanford search. (Larry

And it makes a lot of sense for a lot of small businesses. My old boss/company could have saved a ton of cash had he just migrated to Google Apps instead of paying a part-time IT admin to maintain the MSFT Small Business Server / Exchange

It reminds me of a contest my old hometown newspaper used to run each year: a treasure hunt with clues printed daily in the paper. It certainly helped boost readership rates! Yes, it's a bit odd, but it's a new way to get users to try IE8.

Ouch. Big mistake, but great advice NOT to ignore the legal paperwork. As mind-numbing as it can be to go over contracts, NDA's, etc., you need to know what you're signing. At least in his case it was his father, so he didn't have to worr

A quick usability thing... your main icon features an iPod, so my immediate thought was that it was something to manage photos/videos on an iPod/iPhone. That doesn't quite match to your app which is web & desktop based.

Unfortunately you're incorrect. Accidents are very strictly defined, and none have happened in the history of the US Navy. There are incidents where reactor water is released into the sea. These are rare, and the radioactivity released i

The technology is really simple. As we occasionally described it: "Hot rock -> make steam -> make boat go." The complexity really comes in the metalurgical issues, in my opinion. 40 years is a substantial period of time. And yes,

That's where a professional and well-trained workforce is important, with indepenent and very strong regulations. I'm a former US Navy submarine officer, and the US Navy has been operating nuclear reactors in some of the harshest environme

YES. Don't even worry if your school doesn't offer the class for it. A friend of mine and I did self-study for one AP test, and started about 3-4 weeks before the text. I didn't "ace" it, but I got a high enough score that it got me out o

Surely it's not too different from what Scaled Composites had to do when they built/launched SpaceShipOne. (Yes, stationary launch is different from air-launched, but the regulatory approvals as I understand them have to do with space , n

Amazon, Yahoo, and Microsoft all come to mind. Yahoo and Microsoft for relevance to search, and Amazon as a bookseller. They're all big enough and technically competent enough to do it, in my opinion.

The thing that strikes me about all this craziness over Google Book Search is that Google did an extraordinary thing: they made significant progress toward scanning every book ever printed. With great effort (and risk) comes great reward.

Of course for this to work, you have to have someone at/near the top that believes in it! (...says someone who used to work in a place that would have gotten me fired if I had worked like this.)

Organizations are complex systems. Cherry-picking parts of one system (whether it's from Joel, 37signals, or anyone else) is essentially useless outside of the original context. It's why culture is so important to get right from the start
