I remember reading about Microsoft Research's "Penny Black" project, where an e-mail could be essentially certified as non-spam by various types of currencies. (Such as computational cycles, cash, etc.) What I'm curious about is how this

It's great to see companies talk about the features they remove in addition to the ones they add; thanks Amir!

Exactly. It's the only reason I use bit.ly; so that I have a basic gauge on how many people clicked through, and when.

I think the "Freemium" project on Github would also be a good alternative. It builds off of ActiveMerchant and focuses on a subscription model. http://github.com/cainlevy/freemium/tree/master

They do. :) From the article- "We’ve funded a lot of start-ups from Europe and from England specifically. We would be delighted to have more, especially from Cambridge."

I'd get in touch with Matt Schofield about it. For any other Cambridge (UK) hackers checking out this thread, there's a pizza/beer meetup at the Cambridge Coworking space tomorrow (Friday) night. Plan is to chat about nefarious plans that

There's already a company beta-testing this core technology: TrueKnowledge, based in Cambridge (UK). http://www.trueknowledge.com/technology/ It's an interesting concept, and has much broader applications through their API.

Not redundant; there are lots of things you can grow on a farm in Nebraska. (As a kid I grew up on a farm.) But it is a fun opening line.

I had heard a bunch of this before in random threads, but it was very interesting to read it all bundled together. It definitely deserves a few readings... Thank you!

Very true, but I just took a look at the blogs section and think there's some room to add a number of VC's there, too. Most of them have very interesting posts, so there's some good potential value, there.

I think "Suggest a Feed" would be fine. I took a quick look on the Twitter page, for example, and I know there are a lot more VC's using it than what are shown. But agree that you do need editorial control. :)

Looks like a good start, though there are a bunch of potential feeds to add.

I highly doubt they'll want to or be able to spend much time getting other "dyno"'s working until they've got a solid customer base with RoR. No reason to spread themselves too thin until they can demonstrate they can serve their customers

I'm really interested to see how users will use Tipjoy on Inkling. It should make for (at a minimum) an interesting social experiment.

The ruby/rails hosting-in-the-cloud is a much bigger "value-add" than editing in the browser. I've been using them for a while and really like the way they're headed. Yes, they're Ruby/Rails-centric, but don't see why they have to stay the

Great story, Nate. Though I hope Inkling's main market doesn't get too crowded with too many people trying to do the same thing!

This was a Guy Kawasaki/Garage.com funded company if I remember right. I've got mixed feelings about some of the companies he's funded/promoted/started, though his books are interesting.

Very interesting... I wonder if there's a business here? Free access to the text for the public, with premium features for people/orgs willing to pay?

Exactly. The value of each of these programs is directly related to the guidance, advice, and networking involved. Having a good selection process is also a good validation of teams/ideas.

Strangely enough, I have a friend (with an MBA) who's doing exactly that. He's the business talent and his wife is the design talent.

Not every MBA is doing this. A number of my MBA classmates are getting into things like bio-tech, micro-sensors and other kinds of industries, where their background matches research developments in the University. But if you have an inter

Google at least seems committed to open standards, which is much better than virtually any other solution. And it theoretically means it should be fairly straightforward to move your data in the future should you wish...

I worked for a VERY large international bank which just started rolling out XP internally about two years ago. I mean, they need to be careful about stability, but come on!

It looked like a full-size simulator to me. Programs like these often create full-size mock-ups/simulators which look just like the real thing but aren't functional or are only used for training. It's also easier to take photos of them. The
