Before reading I had imagined this article was going to be about improving fundamental skills rather than configuring text editors and IDEs. At least for me, the former has had a far larger impact on productivity and I consider those my rea

The remote control that came with our Samsung TV has a small solar panel on the back. You just leave it face down when not in use and then never seem to have to charge it via the USB.

Is there an argument to be made that this could be retro-fitted in older homes to reduce fire risk? Or does fire risk mostly come from outlet wiring?

Audible for audiobooks is the most obvious there. That's an interesting point about podcasts, I naively assumed most people were familiar with them long before Spotify offered them. I have been using PocketCasts for many years but iTun

My point still stands. They chose the path of trying to get market share from incumbents in the podcast and audiobook market rather than trying to innovate in their core music business and that has cost them in multiple ways.

How does innovation help them make more money? In the case of higher quality, they can charge more. There are premium services such as TIDAL doing that.

> Honestly, what do you expect Spotify to do? Innovate to grow, if growth is the objective. For example, they could better serve the audiophile market with higher quality offerings. Not as much growth there though.

I heard the NPR piece about this yesterday. I enjoyed when they asked a 100 year what the most impactful invention of their lifetime has been and they said the interior spring mattress.

Right. I think we'll end up seeing models that iterate on larger parts of autoregressive generations before presenting them to the user. It's just more compute, i.e. the bitter lesson.

There's a similar point to be made about simulation. When philosophers suggest we might live in a a simulation I always wonder where the simulation would be running such that all this detail could be coherently generated.
