A profession that needs a cable longer than 1 meter with full bandwidth and power. (This one is 3 meters.) Active cables are much more complicated and expensive than passive cables, and full bandwidth, full power cables even more so.

Your assumption that this decision is being made for career related reasons is what people are saying is cynical.

I misread it. The article says “30 min less than driving,” but I read it as “30 min.” Airplanes take 60-90 min, not counting boarding etc.

According to the University of Washington report, high speed rail is in competition with metro-to-metro air travel, which also involves arriving without a car. I don’t know how this particular route rates on that metric, but I do remember t

Your world-weary nihilism is appealing, but I don’t buy it. Your core premise is flawed: perhaps you drink to get drunk, but that’s not true of everyone. Heck, I don’t think it’s true of most people, other than alcoholics. It’s not true

This intrigued me, so I looked it up. Sadly, your memory doesn’t seem to be correct. Mercury’s day is 59 earth days and its year is 88 earth days. https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/planet-mercury.html

This is a type of article called a “human-interest story,” and isn’t intended to teach you how to protect your home from fire. Instead, it’s soft news intended to create an emotional connection to the impact of the fires. This sort of story

There’s a point at which money is no longer the deciding factor in people’s decision making. The amount of money required to make it a deciding factor again is uneconomical, and is of the “I’ll do this for a few years, then retire” variety,

I get your point, but check out the history of the steam engine. The first one was invented in ~30 BC. Additional attempts were made in the 1500s and 1600s. It took until 1712 before it was commercially viable.

It’s low-quality journalism. The actual report says that HSR competes with metro-to-metro air travel, and explicitly contrasts it to commuter rail. It says that when managed poorly, —for example, trying to serve too many communities—HSR en
