The honest answer? There are some people who have climbed to relative positions of power not by producing value but by playing the business social metagame. It's not about having the best quality product, there are two ways to reach th

Can absolutely relate to the linkedin cringe. I need to continue to increase my presence there, and I feel an almost physical resistance. Feel dirty whenever I put my marketing hat on and wade into that pool of narcissists. I'm seeing

The alternative is more strange. In Europe not too long ago my partner and I called in to an undergroundish bar of the kind we used to frequent when we were younger for a beer on the way back from dinner. It's the sort of place where p

On the SaaS side, yeah I think that's a good move. In this case there's a large hardware component of the sale which incentivises the software over-promising. There's also a lot of competition (think a tender process). It

This is a very common story. Unfortunately the incentives and general historical inertia around sales as a role don't always gel with the long term picture. It's a very human story, but it's one I've had to try to put pr

I spent many hours as a child playing load runner (the legend returns) but I have no idea where we got it. I think our Compaq Presario at the time must have come packaged with a sierra disk.

There are open source QR scanner apps on F-Droid which actually make you tick a box saying "I've checked the above URL and I want to visit that website" before they will open the browser.

That's true today, I agree. Having watched this movie a few times, I like to have the insurance policy of open source licensing so that it stays true tomorrow. Once something is proprietary it's arguably easier from a developer pe

Not OP but for me it's to avoid the following playing out: 1. gradually, more vendor lockin (read: not plain markdown) features are added 2. greater focus on monetization 3. exit 4. go to #2. In some products this doesn't matter.

I've never been lucky(?) enough to reach a scale or level of domain messiness where the standard method of indexing things naievely in elasticsearch or even typesense breaks down. Especially to such an extent as the umbrella example. W

This happened to me too. It threw me because they told me which machine to go to (#11 for example) and when I arrived my items were already listed. For a moment I thought they had futuristic CV covering the whole store.

This reminded me of an ongoing hack that I have running in a production webapp. When I was writing it there was no easy opt-in cache busting (renaming scripts at build time, or applying a static random querystring to the script requests, et

Even in the public markets this happens all the time, eg. Biotech, new battery chemistries, etc. In trends people pay for a seat at the table with a good team and worry about the details later. The 2B headline number is a distraction.
