My household has been Mac-only for about 20 years, but I finally gave up waiting for a decent Mac Pro or a powerful Mac Mini. Last year I put together a PC for about $1500 [1] which looks great and completely demolishes any Mac for GPU-he

Thanks! I didn't see it mentioned here or in the HN comments, and looking at a bunch of font samples didn't turn it up, either. However I did stumble into Fira Code [1], which has some awesome ligatures for programming! [1]: http

Does anybody know the font used in the screenshot [1]? It looks like a pretty typical monospace coding font but has fantastic pseudo-cursive italics. I can't figure out what it is, but I want it! https://twitter.com/mxs

There's no evidence that Quinn wasn't feeding her cat well, before or after getting the robo-feeder. Many domestic animals will search out food when bored, even if they're not hungry. In this case, I think for both Quinn and

There was no neglect. Quinn bought a fancy feeder because nerds love stuff like that, right? Cat figured out how to defeat the feeder. By the time she's welding a steel enclosure for the feeder, the story has clearly moved from "s

Seconded on iStat Menus. Despite its cost, it shows a ton of useful statistics, including moving graphs of CPU activity, network IO, storage IO, etc.. It's easy to customize the display so you see just what you care about.

I just read the F2FS paper and it seems very well-designed to match the physical properties of flash, plus some interesting capabilities to keep hot/cold data separate. If there's something wrong with F2FS, let's fix it. This

Well it "seems simple" in terms of the value you get: your speedometer is only a quick glance down, so until you get used to driving with a HUD, you don't really appreciate its value. Eliminating all those glances down to the

My wife's BMW X4 has a built-in HUD, and to us the killer uses are: 1) Current speed shown along with the speed limit. It gets the speed limit from onboard maps combined with using the car's cameras. If there's road construct
