I didn't know that they had finally gotten an OSX native (meaning not requiring X11) version out. Now I will try Darktable on OSX.

All assets are bundled into the executable and the measured size is the size of that executable. If you download the 14k .zip file available on that web page, inside you will find a 128 byte .com file. In this case, there is no sound and th

When PCI replaced ISA (which was prior to USB taking off), dealing with IRQs and DMAs was a thing of the past, making that a poor reason to say USB is superior.

I don't think that using a Raspberry Pi as a poor mans Transputer will be very satisfactory. The INMOS T800-20 was 20mhz and did 10 MIPS. However, it had four links, each doing 20Mb/s, so it can communicate at about the same spee

The Mir change wasn't made in 14.04, so if you update from 12.04 to 14.04, you will be using unity, X11, and Upstart, much as you are now. If you don't specifically want software that is available on 14.04 but not 12.04, and you a

Since Chrome uses the 3D accelerator to render normal pages, without Nvidia's "hobble" the 2nd GPU would be active all the time, which would be poor for battery life. It would be nice if it could be configured to do just that

BTW, Solaris 11 and OpenIndiana support Linux Branded zones. These have a linux user land and are mostly syscall compatible with Linux, so many linux programs can be run on them as is. I suspect that SmartOS took that out, but OmniOS (the

Plenty of people run Debian and Gentoo in chroots on top of other linux variants. That is done on Android devices by people who want a more familiar userland to work in and it is done by people for testing and development across distros.

With SmartOS, you get the netbsd userland and package system rather than the Solaris one. For the most part, this means it is more likely to just have what you want and be easier to build for.

OpenZFS is a fork from before Oracle took ZFS closed again. It still has the CDDL license. OpenZFS is directly used by the people who maintain ZFS on various platforms (such as ZFS on Linux). The end ZFS implementation can be used many pl

ZFS on Linux is OpenZFS ported to Linux. As various OpenZFS users (FreeBSD, Nexenta, etc) add features to OpenZFS the code will be merged upstream then adopted downstream by the other OpenZFS users (including ZFS on Linux).
