I really can't wait to spend more time learning Rust, but that bit you just put out strikes me as a fair bit more complex than just multiple returns plus "don't ignore your errors, dude, you crazy?". We've got the

I think the poster was saying that java exceptions don't tend to force error handling to the same degree as the multiple-returns approach does. "But it's a checked exception!" Like 90% of the code I've written in J

Yes, but reading code is much more important than writing it in most contexts, and you're not limited by typing speed anyways. The one-liner would be harder for me to unpack, in most situations, than a 3-liner. You've got 3 calls

There's a robust syscall package that you can use to do whatever you want. And, under the hood, all of their net.Conn types use non-blocking i/o combined with the goroutine scheduler. Basically, the philosophy is that rather than

I can't really give a good example because I'm not sure how it happens, it just has, for me. Maybe it happens in spite of the error handling. Anyways, I think that weaving the error handling code into the mainline of your algorit

Now you've got way less code, and way more cognitive load per line. There's a reason why hideous Java is so successful while beautiful Haskell is a punchline to jokes.

It's actually awesome. At first it feels ugly to write, and you're generating all this unnecessary noise in your code, but then you finish a big project and overall the manual error checking combined with defer leads to less co

The poster was talking about an $8/hr temp job. He's already made a decision to trade dignity for necessity. Defending dignity at 'all costs' makes it sound like you've never had to make a hard decision in your lif

It's a public perception and media job. Being popular is literally the job description. We're not talking about some poor persecuted office worker who just happens to hold unpopular views and now can't hold a job anymore. M

Well, at least you didn't mention Hitler. Mozilla made a business decision that the guy was a liability for a public non-profit. That's capitalism, not totalitarianism.

Well, the US has a pretty checkered history regarding Cuba if you're going to talk about altruism. I'd say we've done more to inadvertantly prop up that regime than to undermine it. There are 3 nominally communist countries

I'm a big believer in benchmarking before saying things, but I think we could skip the benchmarks when asking the question "does 1 4096-byte read or 4096 1-byte reads complete faster".
