When we bought our house it had a lawn in the backyard. I never really liked taking care of it. Last year I worked on getting rid of the bermuda grass in my back yard. This year I put out some wild flower seeds and watched what came up. I s

I worked with the author at a past company. He was an ideal coworker. He's an excellent communicator and was great at cutting through whatever else was going on to help us get the important things done. I'm happy to see his writin

How it's written here it won't be null. However the general pattern is to check for null in the finally block since it may not be provable that the stream is non-null (e.g. created in a library call or similar). In fact the try-wi

Pretty neat. It'd be nice to be able to choose more chords. For instance with some inversions the voice leading can be improved. Also it'd allow for using secondary dominant and other chords with non-scale notes.

I tend to agree that I don't like the harsher saxophone sound, but there are some great usages of the sax without that. Paul Desmond (played with Dave Brubeck) is a great example of this in my opinion.

Reminds me of how spring configuration works between yaml and property files. It does a similar flattening to translate between them.

Writing laws feels a bit like a monkey's paw. No matter how well written a law is they often have unintended consequences or are implemented manners that weren't imagined. I don't think the bill's author/sponsor is

Very much agreed. Like all things balance is needed. Often it's worth thinking about performance during initial design. There's the idea that fixing bugs earlier in development is cheaper. This also applies to performance issues.

That's a great example. I remember having lessons in school where we analyzed ads to decide what persuasion/propaganda techniques were being used. I hope these types of lessons are taught somewhat commonly. However I don't re

The code for windows has been leaked and people could get the source. Sometimes companies have agreements for viewing the source of software they produce. These are two examples where the source code is visible, but this alone does not make

That depends. The district my kids are in avoids the issue by creating a fall break for the full week that just happens to cover Columbus day.

My understanding of checklists in this context is they are not intended to decrease autonomy. They aren't meant as a means to use lower skilled labor for important tasks. Instead they make sure the baselines are taken care of and we ar

Is this mostly renaming the notes or is there something more? That said it is a useful way to think about some musical concepts. It's the same as integer notation for pitch classes if I'm understanding correctly: https:/

There are humans that eat insects. I don't think there's something about eating insects we automatically find unappealing. I believe we've been taught that. Another idea is we don't like seeing the face of what we'r

Agreed. As a lilypond user, hiding some of the extra stuff would be confusing to me. I don't think it would be simple to create a mode for more easy note-only editing.

I live in the desert as well. I'd love to have a house with better insulation to spend less on AC. Earth sheltered homes seems like a great way to do that (though there are other problems - e.g. moisture, heavier roof). https:/&#

I was thinking the same thing. It's an odd list. It may make sense to exclude cliff dwellings if the list should be the oldest buildings still being used. Still, old, well-made buildings are very neat even if not technically the oldest

Yes! I think a lot of people miss the water part. The land will not grow a lot of the plants we eat or large trees without irrigation. However cows and other animals can eat the scrub that grows there naturally so it makes some sense to rai

Yep, this was me with ZZT. The scripting language was very limited--it didn't even have numbers really. You had to get creative. But it was simple and small enough to understand and try things out. Good memories to me.
