I used to be a Business Intelligence consultant for enterprises. We built reports, data warehouses, dashboards, etc. From my experience, the article is spot on, not linkbait. Maybe MongoDB is better once you have a well defined query that

I had the same thought when I read it. Either that or Google's initial stock price was based more on the company's goodwill than earnings.

The computer helps my boys to read. I have an 8 year old who's desire to read stemmed from his wanting to be able to play online games like Club Penguin. He needed to read the instructions. The same is true for the Leapster video game co

Just cost. There were some issues with a high number of writes, but it has got better. The unscheduled downtime also killed us. But really, it was just the sheer amount of traffic. Real-time multi-player games that people have with them all

This makes me feel a little better. We created a multi-player rpg for mobile phones at startup weekend a few year ago. It actually did ok and it was growing pretty quickly. I hosted it on AppEngine to start and the resources just started

My point was not as much about how you do or don't die from SIDS, but rather that it is mostly a 1st world problem. We don't worry about cholora or dysentery.

I have 4 kids. They all slept face down. They all lived. The point being, even the stuff we fear in the western world is really pretty unlikely. Feed them, don't drop them and you are pretty much good. (for the first year)

I am 33. I currently have almost enough passive income to live. My income comes from retail stores. I am not real confident that they will last another 50 years. What I am able to invest now is my time. So I spend some time on expanding and

No. I lost the retirement account in the divorce. Then again, I kept the businesses. So, I am planning for retirement by creating businesses with recurring passive income.

I imagine your parents are pretty thrilled that you can pull down 90k so early in your career. It likely took them much longer to get to almost double the average household income of the US. The thing is, for lots of programmers the peak is

They did a nice job of trying to frame the problem, but they are dead wrong. "Traditionally, the biggest problem for most small businesses is getting customers in the door." Actually, the primary concern of most small businesses is keeping

Minor nit-pick. Groupon doesn't make money on the float. They give the money to the retailer pretty quick. My understanding is the the retailer gets paid even when the groupon isn't redeemed. One would think the retailer would make up so

Groupons terms are not really negotiable. They offered me the same terms when I called them about my retail stores. (want min 50% off for consumer, they take 50% of revenue). I told them it was too rich. They wouldn't budge. I walked away.

Outside of tech-startup-land I think that is most entrepreneurs definition of success. Then you start adding goals to success like "not have to get a job and can take a vacation every once in a while"

That 95% number is BS even though it gets tossed around frequently: http://www.businessknowhow.com/startup/business-failure.htm Apparently 44% of small businesses are still in business after 4 years.

How about if a startup works with YC and FB, will they be prohibited from working with Twitter? What if FB is developing a "beta feature" that the startup wants. Can they ask Twitter for the same feature?

I guess that is a key difference in real-estate and retail. The margins in retail aren't high enough to hire a management company to handle all of the details. Sure, there are store managers, but they have to report to someone. And there i

Ryan, would you need to "love" real estate for this to work? Going back to the initial article, don't do it if you don't love it because you may end up spending a lot of time on it and doing something you hate is a pretty crappy retirement

You want a risk greater than the reward? That seems like a losing strategy to me. What you want is a reward greater than the risk. Of course, everyone wants that. The way to find it is to have some insight into how to make the market more

Yes, but that is if someone is looking at it. It is not easy for them to script if they stole a database of accounts and passwords. I am under the impression direct, targeted attacks are pretty rare, and that most of the purpose of a passw
