I was on Mastodon for more than a year and loved it: great conversation that reminded me of the hope and promise of the Internet in the late 90's. Then my instance admin went AWOL, the site crashed, and all of my data and social graph

Pretty much every demographer agrees that the world is on track to top out at 11 billion people due to rising standards of living, access to health care and reductions in infant mortality, electricity, specialization in agriculture, and acc

The creator of Upstart, Scott, explicitly said that he thought that systemd was better and that Debian and Ubuntu adopting it was the right decision: https://www.reddit.com/r/LinuxActionShow/comments/1xzfv0&#x

Firefox for Android allows extensions including uBlock. That's the reason that I use it on mobile: blocking all of those trackers actually improves performance.

Actually, former Payments Googler here. I have a pretty good idea what could have happened. I will escalate this internally. And no, it shouldn't require a Googler to fix it; something has gone wrong.

People forget that subpixel rendering was a thing on CRT's before LCD's were around. Subpixel order is pretty universally standardized. Is there an EDID data element for pixel order?

It sounds like you hit the point in Linux where this is painful: mixed DPI displays with mixed display scaling. Wayland fixes that. And soon, we'll finally have fractional scaling, too. GNOME is close to delivering that. So, it's

Some people try that, too (and XFCE). Admittedly, they're better than a tiling window manager, but LXDE's last stable release was 2016 and it doesn't have a compositor so all of that graphics hardware in your computer special

That's true: some things are easier on Mac. In particular, I'd say that using software that hasn't been packaged for your distribution is much easier on Mac. However, your example of fonts is definitely not one of those areas

Google SWE interviewer here. You can absolutely interview in Ruby. I have it listed on my language interviewing skills page. It is harder to schedule for more obscure languages because we have to find 4 people with that language who are ava

You said above that you have set LNH for a T3 writing out the obvious solution to your question. The problem is that optimizing that solution comes one of two ways: 1. having seen the specific class of problem before and knowing, as you

Cribbing from a famous quote: this interview methodology is the worst except for all of the others. We don't know what a systemic, better interviewing system would be.

I kinda agree but think that you are overselling the signal generated. We have internal data that we can't discuss here that throws some doubt on the signal from whiteboard interviews of the type described above.

It's largely better with Wayland because the apps can receive a previously impossible signal that they are being moved between displays with different HiDPI scaling. In GNOME 3.26, today, for example, a lot of the HiDPI pain is gone in

On the way to Aspen from Denver, it's a perfectly valid route to take during warm months and isn't particularly more dangerous than any other route to Aspen for a tractor trailer. Often, when there's a bad crash on I-70, that
