Not sure why this isn't on the front page already?! Especially when this time last year Adria Richards' story wouldn't go away for a week.

Microsoft should join the LLVM group and just port any MSVC extension not supported in clang over already. :-)

If all you're building is a service proxy to a database, node will get you very far really fast. Its thin layer will allow you write a clean REST api that consumers can reliably call. Javascript does not scale well though when a projec

I 100% agree San Francisco needs to build more high-rises for the enclaves of south-bay workers who now live here. Let them have all of SOMA in fact, it shuts down after 7 PM and remains dead on the weekend anyway. They won't even be h

Writing a large scale iOS app with 100s of XIB based views is equivalent to writing a Visual Basic app in my opinion. Suddenly your app is now dependent on -awakeFromNib and subclassing requires yet another another XIB. Just some reasons I

What does this have to do with desktops? This article is saying that as people apparently migrate to larger phones they will then find tablets unnecessary. I think there is room in the world for people to have both a small one-hand useable

Surprised to see Clojure going down. I only heard about it last year for the first time and it seems to be popping up more and more.

My own experience goes like this: I was only an employee, so the motivations for selling to a parent company could be different. Yet from my angle, it was either, A) go for another round of funding or B) find a company that would be a natur

I can sympathize with RMS's argument that companies like Apple & Google can create plugins and modules that are proprietary because LLVM/Clang has a non-copyleft license. However, it would not be in any contributing companies

I think this is a bit of an unfair comment. Apple has been constantly improving their App Store. When it launched it was literally a direct port of their Music store over with little thought of how Applications and their use cases actually

My #1 would be Beta testing through the store. We need a way to get an application out to set of people to test in the field. TestFlight requires managing a provisioning profile that has been filling up quickly as the group of testers come

Well I guess in theory since you could build clang/llvm for Windows and Linux you could build the iOS cross-compiler toolset. The code-signing (not sure if that one is open sourced already for OS X) would need to be ported. App install

Google Ventures backed much of the company. So I doubt the VCs would let Apple make a lowball bid for the company (typical of Apple acquisitions). Plus Apple is never known to leave a company running, instead fully integrating it and all of

Xcode (and the entire tool-chain) has support for static frameworks that would negate any distribution problems the OP wants. Apple snips that functionality out of the iOS SDK for some unknown reason, but I suspect that would be a much bett

That is not the reason Apple didn't provide true background application support in iOS 2 & 3. It was a battery driven initiative by designing the push notification system over letting apps manage their own background runloop. Plus

A/B testing has nothing to do with the application review process. It's for either A – bringing a new service online that cannot handle the load right away (server tuning), or B – testing the UX and fine tuning it before releasing

I agree with most of the review, except the controller. The battery life on the dual-shock 4 is really poorly designed. Playing games for more than a few hours at a time almost always requires plugging it in to keep using it. Note: The Dual

Would be great to see the changes made in the ARM variants too. I know there's no value in compiling libobjc for ARM, but at least for academic value.

Well right now people can buy super cheap $9 a month DSL service that provides very basic speeds. The difference right now is that the user of that service can decide where and how they use that bandwidth (assuming it's all legal). So

Well, lower income families in the US are far richer than equivalent families in emerging markets. Either that, or they at LEAST have access to credit to make access possible, just a burden. So that's not really a fair comparison.

A lot of what I read here reminds me of the Apple I joined 6 years ago. That's great to see other companies understand the value of small autonomous teams.
