You could only insure bitcoin that is stored in a wallet that you control (i.e. act as a bank).

I think it's probably better to allow the option for single sign-on instead (i.e. Facebook or Twitter). It's just as easy for the user, essentially the same difficulty level for the developer, and seemingly much more secure than sending tok

They didn't, necessarily. Banks were just a place to get loans and a slightly more secure place to keep money than a hole in the back yard: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Deposit_Insurance_Corpo...

They have been pretty good about doing that. There was a security patch for Rails 2.3.x 6 days ago: http://weblog.rubyonrails.org/2011/6/8/ann-rails-2-3-12-has-...

I think most of the arguments people have any time Rails does a major change can really be re-interpreted as: "I have a moderately complex Rails app that I want to upgrade, but I don't have much confidence in my tests, I maybe don't have pr

I saw one of Amazon's UX team at a talk a while back, and the way he described it is they have a set of actions/permissions for people who are totally logged out, a set for people who are "sort of logged in", and then a set that require ful

A friend of mine bought about $2000 worth of Bitcoin a couple of weeks ago and (despite my advice to transfer it to his wallet) left it in his Mt. Gox account. A couple of days ago, the Bitcoin and his transaction history completely disappe

I don't know, I've tried turning the water icy cold for the last few minutes of the shower (based on an Art of Manliness article), and it seems like trying to artificially create meaning in something very trivial. I think there's value in c

I don't know if I would consider learning how to code a waste of time, as it's highly empowering to be able to just take a weekend and bust out a prototype of some random idea whenever you want, without bothering your developers who are lik

In my own experience, if the trust is there that's exactly what happens. When there are disagreements, both parties can at least start with the assumption that the other person probably knows what they're talking about.

Of course, didn't you know that the New World Order, Shadow Government, and Illuminati don't even take Visa? Bitcoin only at the Area 51 gift shop.

Bank transfer through Dwolla is easy. Of course, it takes so goddamn long that by the time you actually buy some bitcoin it's gone up 80% from when you initiated the transfer.

I'm pretty sure that wasn't the "standard" WiFi icon until it showed up in OS X. I think the original "standard" WiFi icon was either this one or the one that looks like a person with radio waves coming out of their head: http://en.wikiped

Yeah, I mean stories like this shouldn't really discourage developers. Number one: if you are a developer and you don't plan for something like this that's just a lack of awareness on your part. Which leads to number two: don't depend on a

Oh yeah, I should probably be clear that I personally don't think the icon is a big deal, for the reasons you stated. I actually don't think anything about it is a big deal. Someone made an app that should have been an OS feature, Apple rej

On a side note, if bitcoin ends up doing one thing it will be popularizing Dwolla. If they were smart, they'd get transaction notifications working ASAP so Mt. Gox and TradeHill don't have to keep processing transactions by hand.

It doesn't seem like that's 100% the case, as you can generate a new bitcoin address for every transaction. Unless there's some way to associate addresses as coming from a single wallet, which I do not think is the case.

I believe the same Senators are trying to go after Tor as well, which is comical because Tor was originally sponsored by the US Naval Research Laboratory. Remember when Congress tried to get encryption banned (or hobbled) too, once they rea

Essentially Apple wanted to see if they could get away with being greedy, and when it didn't work out they abandoned it. It's similar to what they've done with app approvals, features, terms of service, signal strength bars, location data,

I think it's more fair to say that making things that should/could be OS features isn't a safe way to make a living. Or if you do want to risk it, just be aware that you should have a fallback plan.
