I disagree. If code would be Apache licensed, I personally would consider to start new company around it. Maybe it would not 'scale', but it would be enough to pay my bills.

I do not like the condescending tone. Many factories require highly qualified personel. Manufacturing turbines (specially turbine blades) is highly complicated. CPUs are made in factories...

Astronomy used this for very long time. Most advanced is Healpix: http://healpix.sourceforge.net/ I really like how fast it is. For example irregular area size of Greenland at 1 meter accuracy only takes a few hundred MB

Java maps return null, sometimes I have to use those in Scala. Most Java Collections does not allow null keys and null values.

Optional types are clumsy when compared to modern alternatives: - Optional does not protect from NPE, null is still allowed - It adds extra layer of complexity - some libraries use it, some do not. it is not enforced - extra typing, Java do

I am surprised nobody mentioned battery saving mode in Opera. It throttles background tabs similar way, but not so aggressively. This will be great thing. Right now my Chrome eats about 10% of CPU, mostly Skype, Slack, Calendar... With Ope

I would not call this "industry perspective". Java type system is good enough for "industrial use". Most problems described in article are not for backward compatibility. But because java at runtime (JVM) is dynamically

Do not update it. Technology is actually painfully slow. Maybe you need to change technology once in ten years (such as moving from C++ to Java).
