@Lionga how do you make $300k easy? Genuinely curious, not throwing shade. Even when I was managing a 20 person engineering team for a fast growing USA based startup I wasn't even seeing that much in salary + bonus. It was pre-IPO so t

Spend $2000 on all the FAANG interview prep courses/mock interviews you can, interview at 10 places, get 2 offers, take the offer that pays the most. Move to SF, live with 10 people in a 5 bedroom place (with bunk beds) for $800ish

Just pick one. Focus on that. It doesn't matter which one, it's the execution that causes most ideas to be successful. If that one idea doesn't work after a year of focused effort try something else.

If you want to optimize to make money: 1. Get good at coding or sales. 2. Get a job at a tech company doing coding or sales. You'll get even more money if you become excellent instead of good, and relocate to a major city like SF.

I lived in Los Angeles for 7ish years. Great place, but it was mind boggling to me how often people were late (as a first generation Canadian with British parents). To the point where I'd show up to _job interviews_ 10 minutes early an

They're not inherently "bad" or "good" it's just one layer of abstraction I personally don't need. I like dealing with just one big global money state variable for personal finance. What made me switch was

Take a deep breath. You have multiple years of savings. You have an in demand skill that won't go out of demand any time soon. You have enough fundamentals of that skill so if you had to switch from one language to another it wouldn&#x

I spent 7 years trying to get a green card in the USA. As a CANADIAN engineer. After two (non-FAANG) companies flubbed the paperwork, I gave up and moved to Asia. Best thing that ever happened to me. That “USA experience” I got working on l

Get a hobby outside of work. Mine is English standup comedy (I live in Taiwan). There’s only 10-15 people really doing it here but its easy to make friends naturally by showing up consistently every week. This goes for any hobby too. Perfor

I've been fired a month before vesting. My ego was super bruised at the time (this was 10ish years ago), but I'm fine now. Knowing what I know now, and having been a manager who's had to fire people, I wouldn't have hire

I second this both as a manager and as someone who cold out reached to a careers page for my current remote gig. There’s not a shortage of engineers. There IS a shortage of engineers who care enough to spend an extra 15 minutes on a task to
