No. The .NET you have to "learn" is just a set of class libraries and interfaces, the gist of which you will get in a weekend hacking together your first C# project. Unix is the platform to teach in CS , if you should even teach towards a p

Agreed. IMO, the only thing that needs to be done to make a plain text RFC more 'usable' is to perhaps add anchor links where needed, such as when other sections are referenced.

Say what you will about Microsoft, but Project Natal is really, really stunning stuff, even if it only works half as well as claimed. I studied computer vision in grad school; this stuff is hard . Hats off to you, Microsoft.

To be fair, we don't know the number of objects -- most of these 125k accesses could be lookups. But then again, if the number of objects is that small, then a hashtable strikes me as overkill. Otherwise yes, he should notch it up to a reas

The ignorance in this article is almost embarrassing. Why does Dave Winer keep getting posts on HN?

Great to see this. Broadcom also came out with drivers for its CrystalHD decoder chip a while ago ( http://www.broadcom.com/support/crystal_hd/ ) and they are actively involved in community development of the driver ( http://groups.google.

Totally agree on the downvoting part. In general (as someone said earlier), the most 'careless' downvotes are self-correcting to some extent. But yes, getting downvoted on the basis of disagreement stings a bit. Other than that, HN is a fan

True, but some types of tries sidestep this problem completely -- I'm a big fan of the radix/Patricia tree (mentioned in the article). It uses less space than a hash table, and has a similar asymptotic runtime when you consider the cost of

According to the Mongrel2 Book ( http://mongrel2.org/doc/tip/docs/manual/book.wiki#x1-560005.... ), there is no pipelining of HTTP requests. Without testing anything for myself, I'm really surprised at this; are the perf gains from pipelini

Nit: the technical term for "integrated language" mentioned here is domain-specific language. People spin off DSLs from Ruby all the time. Incidentally, one could argue that SQL is the most widespread DSL there is. Edit: The author mentions

Nobody, "Max" included, has talked about making money in a method than claimed otherwise. From most indications, his apps are legit. Unglamorous, sure, but I don't think that's reason to "hide" behind a veil of secrecy, as the GP is implyin

Yes, Max/Mark/whoever is maddeningly vague sometimes. I'm not disputing that. I do think his paranoia is a bit unwarranted, but he does seems to value privacy. Now, if he just outright lied, well then that's shameful. I think the digging th
