I upvoted, but I agree so much, I had to comment, too. I wonder how long it’d take to recoup the loss of retrofitting such a system. Despite this story today, this type of problem must be rare. I imagine most of the savings would be found i

That seems like a poorly run company. Idk. Maybe we’ve worked in very different environments, but devs have almost always been aware of the criticality of the app, so convincing people wasn’t hard. In most places, the answer hinges on “is i

I think the point is that systems that aren’t replaced easily shouldn’t be managed like they are, not … whatever it is you’re getting at here.

That’s true. You never know when someone’s tire’s gonna blow out. And I think the added disorientation from having to hastily remove an unanticipated blindfold would contribute negatively, as well. I could even see myself pausing for a beat

I get calls for jobs that would increase my TC by 100k, jobs I’m confident I could land, and I won’t interview for any of them. That’s how much WFH means to me.

The same holds true for apple. I had an iPhone 11 that I finally broke, and the 15 is the first phone with a really significant change (lighting to usb-c). I had a 6 before the 11. OTOH, I’m a minimalist user, so maybe a lot changed between

No it doesn’t. The comment’s syntax is correct. Commas before “which,” and not before “that.” https://www.dictionary.com/e/that-vs-which/# The actual problem is the usage of “which.” If they’re Blueair purifiers

Jesus. We fucked with keycloak for like a minute at one of my past jobs where we used FreeIPA. Gave up, and just didn’t use that functionality beyond whatever default stuff it m if it do. IAM is hard. I kind of enjoy it, but there’s always

Dude, that is the best shit on YT right now. I think it’s more “absurd,” than “weird,” though. It’s more in the spirit of Tim & Eric than Salad Fingers. I haven’t checked MeatCanyon, but I will be soon.

Not necessarily. It depends on the use case. For taking a vacation, having an AI that can instantly translate to your native language would be amazing. That’d solve a lot of real world problems, no doubt. However, translation has a great de

It can still be open source. The AGPL was designed for protections in that scenario. Unless you’re suggesting the AGPL is insufficient. There’s another one that’s really similar, too.

What you call monkey hammer is actually the “golden hammer,” or “law of the instrument.” Idk if that matters to you, but it’s an already defined thing. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_of_the_instrument

They probably misunderstood scale to mean something like “in the ways,” not more literally “by the numbers.” I’ve seen people suggest that we’re more savage and brutal towards animals these days on other websites, and I think that’s an absu

The public employee thing is irrelevant in this discussion. We get to see their salaries because we pay them. Whether or not salary should be public is a tough topic, imo. I can see it creating security concerns for some people who have eno

Funny how often we allow shitty practices in one area because we already allow shittier practices in another. Why not have good policies instead of accepting bullshit all the time?

It’s not obvious even if ads pay your salary. Adtech is mostly real-time bidding, and the bid is for the impression, not the conversion. Adtech wins either way.

Except a few walled gardens, like search and social media (FB and Google do not share much of your data with advertisers, and nearly none with other adtech companies), ads are bought through real-time bidding. And the bid is paid regardless

I’ve seen an incomplete proposal from an adtech CEO that suggests we have a global user ID that we set somewhere, somehow (the tech details aren’t worked out, but the data would be stored centrally in some ad watchdog type org, something li
