I'm responding to how this all aligns with Thoreau's concept of civil disobedience. Billionaires more interested in the expansion of their own business at the cost of the lives of their workers is the exact opposite of what Thorea

I recall the quote from Thoreau, saying we must also stand up to those "who are more interested in commerce and agriculture than they are in humanity." The point of the essay is to exhibit disobedience to government when that gove

R + pandoc + yaml + markdown + quite a few custom build scripts... it seems like LaTeX is simpler in the end. Could you summarize "why not just use LaTeX?"

Many people are complaining about some fines, but here are some others I see that are evidence of this working extremely well: - A police officer was fined for using his department's tools to get someone's private phone number for

It's funny, I had read that paper a few times while learning about bandit learning, and I never noticed their version, which funnily enough outperforms vanilla UCB1 in all of their tests!

UCB1 is really not that much more complicated than epsilon-greedy. Some slightly sloppy code I wrote a few years ago, maybe 20 lines of code: https://github.com/j2kun/ucb1/blob/master/ucb1.py#L7-L35 Sure

This is the kind of article that makes people who think they are geniuses (but have produced nothing useful) feel justified in hurting others to get what they want.

Cute, but it's still just asymptotic complexity... You can use asymptotic notation (big-O) to describe anything that grows. It doesn't have to be code runtime.

Yes, and also, they're just wrong about this "happening all the time." The tactic of shutting down the government for political gain is a recent (and clearly more common) strategy. Before the 90's turned politics into wa
