The problem with PPI is that it creates perverse incentives that are taken advantage of by malicious people[1], in the process creating a large underground economy. I'm surprised that YC would get involved in something as shady as this. Eve

Oxfam is a variable charity at best. Oxfam India, for example was found to spend 70% of what it received in donations on fundraising[1]. In the UK it spends a significant volume of money on fundraising, paying a company called Tag Campaigns

I get quite upset when I see companies scaremonger for PR rather than try to help those who are actually doing things. It seems to follow a particular pattern. Find a bug or bug class in $product. Then start screaming from the rooftops abou

Well, hacks can be social too. I know quite a few social engineers, in fact I've had them speak at my security conference[1]. However, it seems that overcoming a significant hurdle (which isn't something to be sniffed at) isn't really a hac

It is actually possible and Facebook does do it. Everywhere you see a facebook like button, javascript is loaded from Facebook. Facebook logs certain browser characteristics[1] with the request and uses this to identify you. Then when you l

Here's a legitimate question that I'd like to know the answer to. How many petitions on the White House petition site, regardless of the number of signatories have resulted in a direct change to US policy, in favour of the petition? I think

For some reason I'm reminded of Colonel Carthcart in Catch-22[1], who continually raised the number of missions crew had to fly to complete a tour of duty. It's almost like the Whitehouse put the site up to listen to and respond to the peop

I do the odd bit of mainframe security stuff now and again. You can argue the toss all you like about hercules, but the fact is that it's not up to scratch for running a proper stack. Saying you can run Z/OS on it with CICS and RACF and DB2

I'm sure many people in this comment thread would say that this is a terrible idea. But lets say we had a different type of structure in the UK and someone drew up the current system for the UK - no doubt it would look like a terrible idea.

We ditched Office back in 2007 and haven't looked back. We use a mix of OpenOffice and Google Docs for business and the only time we ever have any trouble is when someone sends a document that's really badly formatted. I use Markdown myself
