I wouldn't stop doing development work, especially if you enjoy it. Doing the other roles is a way to learn about some business. By doing them you'll have a better understanding of what happens behind the scenes, and will intera

Learn about business. Ultimately, the job of a developer is to write code which achieves a business goal. If you have a better understanding of those goals, and can anticipate them, you become more valuable to the people writing the checks.

Hundreds, thousands even. They don't show up on HN, they aren't doing anything glamorous or cutting edge. Just small to mid-size businesses building and selling products that people use. If you haven't found any, it's be

I used Enthought before switching to Anaconda. I don't remember exactly what got me to try it, but I found the experience a lot better. Maybe the Windows support? I'm not sure. It's been a couple of years. I hadn't even

This. Check out my username, this is what I do, and I've been doing it for far longer than a decade. The mid-range jobs have always been vanishing. Many times, I'm the guy automating them out of existence. It's always replace

I agree, the protocol looks pretty neat. I wonder what the hold up is on Linux support. I love me some FreeBSD, but Linux is better supported. The note-taking app seems more like a proof of concept than any kind of category-killer, though.

I've had a lot of success with having Github projects to answer that question. "Look for yourself" is a great comeback. It doesn't even have to be original, or particularly useful. Just something that shows that you unde

Hm. Yea, the content for the main page is requested and loaded, but none of the supporting content (CSS, images, etc.) is requested. Copying the URL into another tab loaded the whole thing. I don't really have time to dig into it furth

Pretty safe bet, since that's what the article says. - QGIS, for quick sandboxing and ad hoc visualization - PostGIS, for the actual parcel/zone computations - ogr2ogr, for inserting Shapefile data into PostGIS

I agree with their assertion that hourly employees "prefer the predictability and immediacy of cash to RSUs." $15/hr still isn't much. $30K year. Sure, it would be nice to get a fat payday down the road. People living on

I will upvote just about any project that uses the phrase "you don’t even have to build the compiler anymore." I just started getting into FPGAa and Verilog, so I appreciate these kinds of writeups. Thank you.

Yea, I saw a few in there that I didn't think required anything special. Maybe it's a hangover from the last recession when employers could be choosy like that. A lot of the others fell along the same category. No, you don't

People posting alternative solutions probably haven't watched a dog run through a forest. One of my favorite parts of camping is taking a short hike, while the dogs take a long run all around me (BC and a Britney). Dogs will run throug

I've been through a few of these, and I disagree with everyone else. It's a game. At least, it's a lot healthier to think of it as a game. Life is full of ups and downs, some of them economic. Yes, this is just another one. D
