Absolutely. Sometimes. I was trying to differentiate between the people who do contribute and those who don't. I think it's been well documented that meetings can easily become bloated at some orgs. And if you've been around

I am jealous of your work experience that you can make this comment. In organizations that run really well, this isn't an issue. But there are a lot of development jobs that involve frequent touch-points with middle managers who don&#x

I would hesitate to apply this in all situations, but in a lot of them, all the meetings, and maybe even the emails (although that seems excessive), help you when it comes to making decisions during the "actual" work portions of y

I think your basic premise might not be correct. If you only are getting 4 productive hours of work done per day, then something is wrong. I would say you probably only get 4 productive hours of WRITING CODE (maybe much less), but during th

There is some portion of learning new languages that involves natural ability, which is no different than how people learn math at different speeds. But the overwhelmingly critical factor is motivation.

This is an interesting point because I think the idea behind this particular app is the opposite of what you are seeing as an advantage. With the disclosure that I was out of the dating game before apps existed, and the accompanying lack of

It seems like a pretty good one. To truly answer the large question you need to answer smaller ones like "do citizens have opportunities aside from crime"? That seems relevant to how "free" a country is.

My wife is from Germany. My point isn't really about how "free" Germany is compared to the US (that is an entirely different debate). It is about America and how nuanced things are. It's very difficult to explain a diffe

I have a foreign wife and it really drives home one truth: America is a very nuanced place. We have this idea of almost unlimited free speech. Which sounds great, but in practice, it is not really true. Because ultimately, Americans do not

Love when punk stuff shows up on HN. I would imagine a small minority of readers are, or were, into punk music. But the DIY punk music scene has a lot in common with the startup scene. I will always try to hire people with that background w

I have not studied the subject beyond remembering my own childhood and seeing my children learn, but I think most kids are able to grasp the concept of a variable much earlier than they learn Algebra or coding. Variables grow naturally out

It would if it were true. But in reality, there are lots of people with $40k starting salary jobs (example: a librarian, which requires a masters degree!) paying off $50k loans with 8% interest rates.

I spent a lot of time thinking about this over the years and I have a few key thoughts: The most important base-level skill seems to be the ability to hold the concept of what I call "signal flow" (and others would call "stat

If you are in the US and know people who are aged 30-50 and not software engineers, this is almost all that they talk about. Some people manage to pay them off, others (due to high interest) owe more than when they started. It is a huge pro

My band played a couple shows with Catharsis and I actually recorded one of their first albums at my old recording studio in pre-crimethinc days. Definitely super cult-y but in a fun way, I hope. I have definitely heard some funny stories.

Personally, I would be bored as hell after a month at a tropical beach and be very excited to get to work on building something--anything! Maybe that's not what everyone's response would be.

I am not sure if I agree with all the advice here. I think the first thing you should do is celebrate. Take a month and spend it on a tropical beach, or whatever your dream location may be. If you like company, bring along some friends and

I imagine this is quite normal in the non-startup world. At most "established" companies, as long as you are in charge of ONE THING that saves other people some trouble, it is hard to get fired. The expectations at a lot of jobs a

No idea why this is getting downvoted. AR/VR in 2021 absolutely feels like an Apple II in the early 80s or the internet in the early 90s. I would be shocked if it isn't the next big thing.

I wonder if there is some way you could pull data from the sound of the waves breaking instead of an active ping? That might be the only reasonable way to get accurate readings in that zone.

Not eating meat is one of the major things a person can do to reduce their carbon footprint, so I would imagine more people giving up meat would be very helpful collectively.

So, the problem is (mostly) that the sweet spot is so small, you need to have the lenses extremely close to your eyes. The lenses adjust left-right to accommodate eye spacing, but NOT forward/backward. So the only way to get the lenses

There are 3 lens positions, but that isn't the issue. If you close one eye, no matter where you position your open eye, the sweet spot is TINY.
