Seems dickish toward the company you work at for 4 months though. Were your offices by that famous Gaol? I thought it was interesting seeing a mix of the old and new so close together.

Maybe, we tend to put up with less nonsense though. However, that's typically beneficial to business as well. The only software engineers I've ever worked with that actually consider the costs are those that have either owned thei

Well now you and my wife can agree on that. So I've got two people in my corner! I'm actually a mediocre software engineer. Making an accounting system do XYZ for the 4000th time isn't interesting anymore. Doing it in Angular

I was going to say you're late to ICQ if you found it in the late 90s, but then I realized I'm still using my yahoo mail account and have no room talk ;-) When I first used ICQ in 1996 (a buddy introduced it to me) I couldn't

How is this a dickish thing to say about white men. I am a white man. Having worked with 1 woman in 15 years in Oklahoma & Texas in development I worked with roughly 60/40 (men to women) developer teams in the Bay Area. Also the br

So charge for it. I don't see what the big deal is. I've built a good amount of software. I never did any of it for free, although it's why I've never came up with anything like Facebook, etc. I could never figure out ho

I'd say JavaScript instead of a strongly typed client-side interpreter. Or maybe the ability to execute binary blobs that's cross browser compatible (similar to Flash, yeah I know, ActiveScript is essentially JS, or ActiveX) but s

I ask them to give me a full design document with their coding style guide. Since it's an 'easy test', this is my 'easy test' to check their procedures. They should already have a coding document in place and they c

I've had this happen multiple times. Why would you hire your own replacement? (This is how they think.) When they have someone hiring not based on what's best for the company but what's best for their own career goals, you k

I gave up caffeine for 2 years. Got tired of drinking just water, beer or milk. Sodas and coffee w/milk sugar are too tasty. All I did to quit was pop advil for a few days. Quitting caffeine wasn't remotely difficult physically. I

Mame is fantastic for this reason. Although, I'm not sure how I played a lot of those games, they're much more difficult than I remember. I guess when you had only $5 in quarters you had to make them last. Getting a $20 for games

It's graded vesting, I've always seen it at 5 years (20%/year). It seems they do 20% after the first year then 1/48th afterward monthly (which is nice). Legally they can do up to 6 years.

They key is to save madly and prepare for the downturns. One of my friends in SF bought his house in 2011 for 500k. The comps in the area 5 years later are 1.2-1.4m He was prepared (waited 10 years). You can do it, you just have to look at
