The marketing/value add Apple brings is putting a highly desirable platform with great capabilities in front of loads of people who are proven to like spending money on apps etc. NetFlix and co. would never have this reach without Apple.

HN is probably quite an aspirational thing for those still stuck in the perceived drudgery of enterprise and large scale software development for established companies. It's their dose of inspiration, I feel. I agree it doesn't add a lot of

Sounds like utter chaos for any seasoned professional. No QA? No real product managers (or at least none with any teeth)? Design as optional resource? Ops managing user engagement metrics? Where's the security audit? Scary, even for a devel

I absolutely agree on the virtualisation front, and I'm a steadfast Mac user. Dev systems should be close to production/staging to avoid weird bugs. I really really don't want to spend my time dealing with whatever version of Erlang I can g

Any examples of when this would be desirable? Seems to me that monitoring and running tools should just, you know, monitor and run things. Separation of concerns.

This reminds me of the bad old days of Rails, when every man and his dog had some random hacky and myopic solution to keep Rails and Mongrel running. Just say no to Node/Rails/whatever specific-stuff, kids--use system level tools for runnin

London, UK: Smarkets Limited, a social gaming site, is looking for a front end developer (Websockets, Python, JS, CSS3 a bonus) and an Erlang developer to join our small tech team. yourlife@smarkets.com for more information. Unfortunately r

This is hardly an apples to apples comparison. Pyramid (ex-Pylons) and Django are "full-stack" frameworks with everything incuding the kitchen sink. App Engine only runs on App Engine, so probably isn't that relevant anyway. The others are

Yahoo! has many successful products. The Yahoo! homepage, Mail, the category leading Answers, News, Sport, and Finance. Those are some of the biggest sites on earth, it seems a bit silly to pretend that Yahoo! doesn't have successful produc

That doesn't work on mobile Gmail or Gmail via IMAP (like on iPhone Mail, for example). So it's a non-starter for me.

I pretty much agree with all of the points raised here about Django, and I've been using it professionally for almost 3 years. The core development team is incredibly hostile to improvements that don't fit some fluffy definition of where th

Fair point, I'll update my instructions with a warning, and a version of your commands that works for OS X as well (OS X lacks ssh-copy-id). The instructions are intended for new server builds (hence installing Git etc.).

As the author, I can respond to this: Given the decentralised nature of Git, having continuous backups becomes less important unless all my computers (including the server) fail at once. But yes, backups are important, and they are done.

I had a lot of trouble seeing past the Hi-Res (studio behind Requiem for a Dream, among others) style pop up-driven website with cheap interactive plays at emotion. Surely this is just an old-school DHTML site built using new tricks? I thou

Just because people use electricity and have running water doesn't mean they are abandoning their culture to embrace western values. Is anyone actually surprised by this? That's some serious western arrogance.

And what was the market, exactly? Seems to me that not a single person I knew actually wanted to use it, or thought it filled a niche they needed filling.

As a UK resident I think the Times missed a trick in their pricing model. Rampant speculation follows: I expect a decent chunk of their visitors are people who receive links via some other Internet medium (social networks, blogs etc.) and w

These APIs are just the beginning. We have plans to make our Erlang-based REST backend mostly public, so eventually people will be able to write bots and all kinds of other applications on top of our data.
