The article in question is linked, and it does a great job of putting the varied forces into a single frame of reference. The market is the thing we create, and its effective functioning is what competition and regulation is meant to enable

A large portion of the laws you live under, are exactly like this. Norms make up the major chunk of governance.

Wait how? Internal testing showed these features were addictive. They had resources allocated to creating addictive experiences for tweens. The underlying behavioral science is well studied, down to the causal level. Dark patterns are desig

Which is fine. As the article points out, we value markets because they find ways to allocate resources effectively. Insider trading is illegal because it breaks the market. Firms can optimize as they like, but if the net result is that the

Thank god, and a million times yes. There is no market if you have no mechanism for price discovery, no meaningful alternatives, users are addicted, confused, and simply unable to switch. Things WERE better before we combined skinner boxes

I also am fine with this, I don’t need thinner than things already are. More battery life and product longevity on the other hand is brilliant.

Slogans and bromides are good starting points but not solutions. The government IS preventing coordinated price setting by closing the loophole of third party data brokers.

It’s abrupt only if you are unaware of safety challenges and issues in children’s gaming in the past decade. Moderating user generated games is a kafkaesque joke. It’s not just text, audio, or video. It’s all of those combined in an interac

Yep, things went downhill after social media. Social media + mobile phones pit the ingenuity of our cleverest minds against the will and habits of the many, to sell ads.

They are selling an impossible product. If you make an LLM more safe, you are going to shift the weight for defensive actions as well. There’s no physical way to assign weights to have one and not the other.

1> Genie out of the bottle: Yes and no. Nudification is a growing problem, non consensual intimate imagery is a current problem. AI related tools for image gen still require some amount of skill, and that is reducing its blast radius.

Most organizations don’t have the resources to let people travel without an actual event on the other end. I could be wrong, but I suspect visas may be affected as well. The organizers and attendees will try and coordinate something else. H

Why dont you state what it is you think isn’t clear? That way we can figure out what it is that’s confusing or unclear and then see it you find it has any moral moral significance.

This feels like an instance of weasel words. One can scarcely imagine any reason to do content moderation over people’s own private and personally consumed data.

Well, you would fortunately be wrong. Fantasies are commonplace and well studied in society, psychology and even in the law. The issue is when you go from fantasy to actually enacting it, which is usually when you earn the epithet of “Creep

Yes and no. Safety and user pain is a part of tech which seems largely ignored, even on sites like HN. I really have no idea why this ignorance prevails; commenters seem to genuinely be unaware of what goes on in Trust and Safety processes.
