It's not about getting clicks while you're reading gmail (the adwords on the side), it's about mass gathering data about you and others. Re-read run4yourlives message. He does not say gmail tries to sell you product X, but gmail tells Googl

He wants something to find the perfect product for him, even if he doesn't know there's a need for it. I guess that's a nice desire for someone with lots of disposable income. I really don't want anyone offering me anything to buy right now

You are right, do not mind the downmods. Simple experiment, buy these three domains: hgjhsushrdksjhfkshfkshf.com hgjhsushrdksjhfkshfkshf.org hgjhsushrdksjhfkshfkshf.net Link them on a single page somewhere, wait Google to index it, and sear

It's really not about email encryption only. None will ever do anything if the reward is not sufficient.

Honest question, can you upload a script file (PHP/Perl/Python/ASP/Whatever) to tumblr and integrate it with other parts? When I was freelancing I used to get a lot of requests like this: I want blog/comments/sharing, image gallery, video,

I wouldn't upvote, but wouldn't flag it either, and I think it'll reach the frontpage. Now, if you put some videos of the construction, some diagrams, some thoughts about the piece, I mean, information about the creative process and its lab

I'm from Brazil. A friend worked on a company that tracked trucks (to know if they are on route, where they are if stolen, etc). They simple used a cellphone with GPS, requesting via HTTP the company's server, with its position/id. They pro

Well, if the standard url naming was chinese characters (ie: what everybody is typing), do you think it would be easy for you? I think you would like to type/access urls in your own language.

Since you and lukev shared similar experiences and are currently modded highly, I want to say I am the opposite of you and more like Jeff, but like he said, maybe we're a rare breed among programmers. People make me feel empowered. I enjoy

Maybe a way to start doing this would be telling people that they are dumb. The past couple weeks I've been thinking that people are ok with small/short/quick news because it makes them think they have figured out the whole thing. Maybe t

Some examples would be nice. Previously satisfied customers or selected insightful comments. Just something for me to judge if the service has any value before spending the 10 bucks.

Calling a cellphone is pretty expensive... But anyway, the consumer might be busy, I guess? Maybe that's a pretty big reason, but I never worked in call centers / telemarketing.

But that's not OP's point. You know when people say "I've forgot more about X than you'll ever know!"? MS has screwed more companies than Apple has on its entire ecosystem. But it has made possible the existence of so many more. While, with

Have you looked at Perl 6/Parrot? I read, or at least my faulty memory remembers vaguely, that Perl 6 syntax is defined by Perl 6, or something like that. From what I understood you'll be able to change its syntax easily (and that's what ma

Cool, but I wish the author didn't put emphasis comparing the CSS3 animation with Flash. I don't think I've ever seen anything so bad in Flash. I know it's possible to do worse, but it's also so easy to do better. Now we'll get people sayin

Seems nice, but I would try just to see it working and then give up. You have bills and it's a free service... Not having any kind of paid plan or income strategy makes you look suspicious.

You can develop in C#, and have it converted to Python and run it on the App Engine. Something you can't do on the iPhone. Google does not limit the language that you can use to write your app, only what languages its App Engine can underst

You're too lazy to open a file, type the unit tests and hitting CTRL+S but you're not lazy to open the REPL, type the unit tests and hit capture? If you can't automate 100% of the REPL-into-test feature, if you need two mindsets/styles/etc,

I think you would end up writing code in the REPL restricting what you would type because you know it'll become a test. Then you wouldn't using a REPL for what a REPL can offer, but writing test code. Unless it was really magical and would
