Note that it is illegal in the US to use an alternate currency. The second this becomes popular, the feds will raid it and shut it down. See Liberty Dollar, e-gold, etc. Casino chips are specifically exempted from this rule, but only inside

Here's the thing: The kinds of ads you don't mind are the same kinds of ads that perform the worst for advertisers. The CPMs will probably reflect this.

One of the things I've learned through years of bootstrapping is that there's no such thing as truly passive income(other than investments). There's always something demanding your attention.

No, the buyer didn't mind. He was buying the site more for the revenue/traction rather than te technology. It's actually very common to create a script and sell both developed sites based on it as well as the script itself.

A couple years ago I created a small international proxy service. The service was targeted at advertisers who wanted to advertise in other countries but didn't have an easy way to see international ads or landing pages from competitors(most

Note that Dziuba quickly shut down Uncov after his startup Persai became the very thing he mocked. Of course, he later had a very successful exit with Milo, so he still gets the last laugh.

I think the bubble argument is more that they're expending nontrivial resources on artsy commercials rather than figuring out a business model.

I guess Microsoft still doesn't know this, a big reason for Bing's growth in market share is a $100 million ad campaign. Much of that ad spend, ironically, is on Google.

If anything screams BUBBLE it's this video. I can't put my finger on it, but something about this video just has such a 1999 vibe to it.

Also, I believe that, if you have submitted an application before the deadline, but then edit and resubmit after the deadline, your application will be marked as late and reviewed accordingly. So be sure to get all of your edits in before t

I think the word startup has lost all meaning at this point, but I would like to propose this definition: A startup is something you quit your job to work full time on. Until then, it's a side project. If the OP is fully committed to work

This is a serious question, so please don't take it as snark or mockery: Wouldn't shooting for dollars increase the growth of your company? Or at least get it ramen profitable so it can't die/fail?

viz. Bill Gates, who is changing the world and doing good in more tangible ways than almost any startup, despite having built up Microsoft with the clear focus of make money and dominate the market first, change the world later.

I don't think I want to change the world right now. I really don't. Does that make me a bad person or unfit to be an entrepreneur? All I want to do is solve a real problem for some segment of a large market and make their lives a little eas

Most people on Facebook are not as sensitive to posts from their friends. See the recent LivingSocial Amazon promo on Facebook for an incredibly successful example of this model.

Don't worry, where you went to school doesn't matter at all. I asked pg the same question: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1995879 Turns out a significant majority of YC founders(80% or so) didn't go to top tier schools.

I remember seeing a comment by pg that if he really thought there was a bubble and was cynically exploiting that fact, he just wouldn't say anything at all. I think, from the perspective of pg and YC, there really is no bubble, at least wit
