I would argue that, unless you're a nonprofit or heavily government funded if you want to keep innovating yes, you need to be a business.

Is the startup echo chamber so bad that people literally get booed for asking how a startup will make money? A startup is, at least in theory supposed to be a business(vs a side project, which doesn't have to be one). Have we forgotten that

Not to be a jerk, but I'm super bummed that people who knew they couldn't come applied anyway, taking the spaces of people who could have come but didn't get in. I got accepted, so I'm not being bitter or anything, but I'm sure lots of peop

It depends on how good you are at upselling and cross-selling. If you have a tightly targeted user base and are the market leader in that niche, there is a lot you can do. For example additional services, job board, JV with suppliers for th

So, basically, don't raise money until you have traction, at which point you probably don't need to raise money. Got it.

AirBNB is expensive for a month. Post in "housing wanted" on Craigslist and look for sublets on there, it will be relatively easy to find a great place. You may find it taking longer to find more permanent housing than you think. I moved to

I was going to post something similar, but you beat me to it. This is absolutely fantastic advice for any startup, and something every startup should commit to doing before they spend months building a product. If you gauge interest before

Believe it or not, but most advertisers are actually not brand marketers, and are interested in performance and results over impressions(think SMB e-commerce).

It might just be an OS X issue as I rarely have a browser window open fullscreen. If the dock wasn't there, it would be above the fold. Then again, I bet a fairly significant portion of the target audience for this newsletter uses a Mac.

Your landing page looks great, but if you want to increase conversions even more you should try putting the subscribe form above the fold. It took me about 5 seconds to figure out how to subscribe.

I think "Write a music player client that can stuff your music into an encrypted blob" is a bigger hurdle for most people than paying $25/month. Besides, doesn't Grooveshark already do this for free?

Mee too! Maybe 1-2 days before or after Startup School, I imagine many people will be flying in for a week or so around the event.

If anyone is in the Bay Area a day or two before Startup School, maybe we can do a pre Startup School meetup in San Francisco? That way the more introverted hackers will come to the event and see people they know.
