Unless the "foundation in math" is really confirmation bias, which math as used by humans is still vulnerable to.

True, but there are plenty of programming side projects that don't require an Arduino, and we often get in our little tech-bubbles and think that the internet is more of a monoculture than it actually is. I've heard (a lot) about the Arduin

Or you're more interested in side projects that don't have a hardware or physical component. Or that require much more specialized equipment, like a CAVE system. Or don't use electronics at all, like 3D printing representations of mathemati

To add to this, different market segments have different priorities. I once saw it explained with food. "Did you get enough to eat?", "Did you like how it tasted?", "Was the presentation good?"--these are very different questions, and the p

A huge chunk of that team size is artists, level designers, testing, audio, and studio overhead. Not that there aren't lots of programmers too, especially in a game with lots of scripted levels and separate systems. But it isn't like it's a

I think that's changing a bit, though. There are a lot more independant developers and people who are skipping the mainstream publishing/dev-studio industry and finding better success. And if they're both irrational choices, why not? Some e

Music copyright is incredibly messed up, even compared to the rest of copyright. I was doing research for a project I'm working on, and it's nearly impossible to determine if any 20th century recording is in the public domain unless the aut

The huge problem here is not just that there's a blatant ad in a SimCity game. Product placements and tie-ins are actually pretty common in Facebook games. Advergames date back to the '80s. The deeper problem is that SimCity is being presen

It's definitely a deep part of the human psyche. Though I can see space for arguing that social media is too effective. Our social instincts aren't structured to process detailed updates from thousands of people, nor to broadcast our person

I can't really speak to general interest. As I said, discoverability is terrible, so I only know of stuff that either I've been following since the '90s or I've seen mentioned by others. So this is a very eclectic list. But they all have re

This year at the Game Developer Conference, Chris Hecker had an entirely wordless rant about the state of creativity in the AAA space, essentially using AAA's PR to point out how little real innovation is happening in that space. [1] It's r

In a sense, those days are back. Despite all of the AAA games that were released in 2012 (and there were some excellent games) the Game Developer Choice Awards last week were dominated by an independent title, Journey.[1] The conference as
