An authoritative digital address increases the power of the private sector. At present, I think it will always be easy to find a new ID-card provider if your current one locked you out for your cat-video-hating ways. Having a permanent auth

The full twitter thread is worth a read ( https://twitter.com/gbrumfiel/status/1628776107301273601 ). Brings to mind the story in December 2022 about confirming the B-21 hangar location from the night sky in a press

grass is always greener =) I remember watching the movie Good Bye Lenin! ( https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0301357/ ) and thinking how nice things would be if we had just one choice for every product in the supermarket

right? And some ads did just that... case in point... all kinds of snake oil medical cures. I think the US FDA did a good job of this for food and medicine, where false claims can have really serious consequences... but I for one am not sur

I'm not so sure about that. I don't think it will be practical and easy to regulate. How to distinguish commercial speech from other opinionated free speech? Advertising from informing? I can't think of an easy legal fix here

See also the BBC documentary series, "Century of the Self". The article starts out by basically admitting that there is some informational role that is needed: "In the early 20th century, advertisements served a clear purpose

Thanks for sharing. Intermediate level speaker interested in having a review method since I no longer use Chinese in daily life but don't want to lose it all either. I have never quantified the N characters I know since I never learned

Nice read. I wish we had train configurations like those I took years ago in Europe: cabins with with 6 seats that converted to bunk beds in the evening-- even in coach class. I would guess maybe in American culture, people would not be wil

Valid points, although risks seem to depend on the scale. A worldwide conflict would have different risks than two-state conflict. I don't see any reflection in the article or linked materials on the lessons from Ukraine, and the poten

Interesting point, re the pauses to take a drag on a cigarette. The only thing I can think of like that now in a workplace or chance social encounter is taking a drink of water or coffee, but I suppose it hasn't really replaced smoking

Thanks for posting this. Everything old is new again. With buzz about moving to Mastodon, I was just thinking about why usenet couldn't be a viable social media platform as it represents so much of what people like about the fediverse,

Some of the discrepancy is semantics. Global maximum lifespan is improving, but that's across societies taking the best survival rate at each age. Within many societies, net longevity gains have stalled.

There's an interesting discussion in the book The Sum of the People which argues that the disorganized recordkeeping in France was a ruse and a deliberate attempt by Rene Carmille to embrace the concept of population registry but to
