A really interesting question. I think that artificial ideas are the way to go, provided that you can find a way to develop a strong interest in the subject somehow. In my personal life I tend towards minimalism, but in my professional life

I'm working on an iOS Postcard app, so I tried them out. lob.com is a really great service, very easy to set up and get started. Do note that in my test it took over ten business days from ordering the card to deliver, so it is good fo

I really enjoy what I'm doing, it is definitely achievable. You weren't brought into the world to toil at a job you don't like. Having a job isn't like school, it is much more open ended. If you are motivated, opportunis

I still use email, it is a core part of my workflow. I start my day trying to hit inbox 0, that works well. I vastly prefer email and other async methods of communication to anything else. That being said, I also use (because of people on m

I got my foot in the door doing QA for a tech company, and then transitioned into Product Management (which I've been doing for about 8 years). If you really shine in QA then you'll probably find some doors open up for you too.

Getting burned out sucks. I'm a PM and I've been there. What helped drag me out was to focus on the process and not the results so much. I spent some time soul searching and landed on what I think is a philosophically sound way to

Happens all the time, unfortunately. Now, whenever I work on a project, the very first thing I think about is how the distribution is going to work, and then build the app around that. The interesting thing I've found is that in the su

Hard to say, timing the market is hard. There are reasons it could continue to go up (if the economy continues to improve, limited housing stock, lots of high income tech workers). There are reasons it could go down / level off (it is

I have a lot of experience with outsourced development, my last couple projects have been like that and it has worked out really well (as in, profitable apps with a lot of users). So I know it's possible. For concern about rights /

The app / app server / web server are written in arc. Arc runs on top of Racket. There's source code for an old version of HN over at arclanguage.com

I like your comment, but I think it creates a false dichotomy between a deterministic universe or one with a higher power. What about a middle option, where there is no higher power but the universe isn't deterministic? If the laws of

Hey Rob, distribution is key. Facebook, Pinterest & Instagram are some of the most engaging and sticky platforms out there. If your target market does not even use those, then what chance do you have of that market finding and using wha

The value add for using FB connect is that if you do it right you can grow an app from nothing to millions of users a day, and have a top 10 (in their category) iOS & Android app without spending a dime on paid user acquisition. The cav

I worked on Horoscopes for Facebook and Birthday Cards for Facebook. Both are apps that span iOS, Android, Facebook canvas and Facebook mobile web. Simple apps but lots of great virals and both are really big with small teams.

I'm a University of Iowa College of Law graduate (enrolled in 2002, graduated in 2005). When I was there the grading system was quite odd - if I remember correctly the average grade was a 78, and getting something like an 82 would put you i
