It’s actually not the “hug of death” that I fondly remember happening more often (although that too was undoubtedly more common) but finding cool, weird, niche topics on the internet that I didn’t know before and were really fascinating.

I remember first experiencing that in the early days of slashdot (must have been late 90s). It subjectively feels like such moments were more common back then.

There’s also weirdness like the electoral college and presidents getting elected despite getting fewer votes than their competitors (see Bush Jr. and Trump).

A lot of these are stylistic choices (or could be at least) rather than mistakes.

You joke, and I'm sure for some people (who don't really plan to stay anywhere for very long, especially if single & childless) it doesn't matter. But I'm 39 and have little kids. I'd like to stay where I settle

Assuming you’re moving long-term, aren’t you worried climate change is going to make Florida (especially coastal southern Florida) a lot less attractive?

Is the word home not used to describe condos as well? I would have figured it’s a place with no houses to buy.

Be that as it may, children have a higher degree of neuroplasticity than adults. You would have probably learned even faster as a child.

Raising could be challenging now due to current circumstances. Hiring I’ve never found that hard, and you can hire people for sales (and learn the basics yourself).

Why Dubai specifically? I would imagine other places (like Singapore) would be more attractive. I recall stories of visa traps being used to abuse workers from the Indian subcontinent in UAE, but maybe these don't apply to higher statu

I thought so too around your age but I’m 39, still working in tech and am feeling better than ever about my career! For me starting my own startup was the best thing I ever did (so far…)

It's getting off topic, but I love how we interpret Knuth's works like those of Rashi[1] interpreting the Talmud: His commentary on Tanakh—especially on the Chumash ("Five Books of Moses")—serves as the basis for more t

You can also switch to a vegetarian or vegan diet, or eat only less ecologically intensive meat such as chicken (and eat less of it).

The original BG is older than TNG, not sure if that story came from the original or the remake though.

Right, I do think you get diminishing returns once you get to "high end and well maintained early 20th or very late 19th century" buildings, a lot of these can accommodate more or less modern lifestyles quite well (albeit not all

Yes, and most of the world (and even most of developed world) are neither Canadian, Australian or American. Europe and Asia tend to have smaller homes & the latter alone accounts for more than half the world's population.

We have some relatives living an apartment (I think) a couple centuries old- I would guess from the early 1800s or 1700s, I have lived in multiple late 19th century and early 20th century apartments and all of them felt a lot more modern th

We might just have different tastes then! I really hate sweating so Berlin is great and it rarely gets really cold, even in winter it’s mostly above freezing most of the time.

Yeah I didn't mean Germany will go unscathed, just less so than hotter countries. And I think you only cherish the sun if you don't live there long term (especially during the summers).

Even once (if) we get to negative co2 it will take centuries for the temperatures to drop back to pre-industrial levels. We’re still taking “only” slowing down temperature increase for well beyond the lifetime of anyone alive today.

I think it really depends. Here (northern Germany) you don't really get a lot of snow. So a bit of snow & the accompanied very dry weather is significantly nicer than the cold, damp ~0-5c rain you'd otherwise get in winter. Th
