I installed this. I have two comments: The first time I launch Firefox after installing, the interfaces asks if I want to import my history or "cancel." I'd like to recommend changing the wording to "Do not import" or something. Did I ju

Yeah - that's a pretty hard case to argue. I can imagine content-controlling situations where you might think of that as a feature, but there are other situations (most use cases, IMHO ) where text selection is an expected paradigm. EDI

Ha! Great commercial, but I wonder if it's really for the audience, or more for the clever zing that is aimed at the egos inside Apple. Basically, the ad is an epic troll, which makes me smile, but leaves me wondering if it will effectivel

I wonder if there's any value in "lobbying" the TSA to implement rectal searches on the basis of this story. It's the reducito ad absurdum tactic: if the lobbying were successful, there's no way there wouldn't be backlash, right? As a r

Well - and I'm not implying that you necessarily subscribe to that justification, but - I don't buy it. There are already laws that grant the authority to shut down a town if it erupts into riots. I can't cite those laws, but I bet the LA

The "agent provocateurs" got a whole thread on the slashdot link - it's a tactic that has been used more and more frequently, it seems. I was one of the bloggers who identified the agents in the Quebec SPP protest (look up "put the rock do

Here's a video from CMU TV of the sound cannon in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNcKexj2cYU I assume the reasoning goes: if you want to stand around, you need to have a permit to do so... and you are free to apply for a permit,

I do agree with you, and that's not something I grokked from the original article. This is a major discussion now in some fields, and there is a small movement to publish experiments that showed no effects. It should be a bigger movement fo

You're right about my claim being approximate - the biggest problem with what I said was "assuming independence." If you're replicating a study, it's definitely not going to be a completely independent event. Usually, you copy at least pa

If a study cannot be replicated, then it's ripe for criticism; replication is the last step in the scientific method, after all. If a study, significant at p=0.05, is replicated again at p=0.05, then the odds of that happening when there ac

I'm in the "t-shirt was a joke" camp, but this does cause me to wonder: is this alleged screenshot also a joke? I mean, in the context of the t-shirt thing, just how credible can Arrington's screenshot claim be, anyway?
