The term fragmentation gets thrown around but its worth unpacking the rationale, because it becomes too simplistic as a epithet. When iOS developers talk about fragmentation they generally mean that it is hard to predict the target size (bu

I know there are pressures to get an article --any article-- out there, but the linkbaiting and trolling (on both pro- and con) is going off-the-charts with the iPhone 5. I really should have stuck to my guns and ignored all the articles un

I think it's becoming clear that Android is winning over the majority of feature phone upgrades, which is great for raw numbers but I wonder if it will take a while for those people to buy into the eco-system. Is the existing wedge going to

Putting R&D as a percentage of revenue is a bit of a dodge. Apple has significantly higher revenue than Google. Apple in the quarter ending Dec 2011 brought in $46.3 billion in revenue, while Google brought in $10.6 billion. So plugging

Not anywhere as much as they should. A few things I do know of: Clang/LLVM (which has substantial support from Apple) will be the primary compiler for FreeBSD. Apple's Grand Central Dispatch (libdispatch) has been ported to FreeBSD. http:/

It has exposed a lot of people to BSD Unix, which I think helped some. But outside of developers and hackers, most people have so little exposure to the Unix side of MacOS X (and practically none on iOS) that it wasn't as big an impact as s

There's more to iOS/OSX Unix than the kernel. The Darwin portion is for most intents and purposes based on BSD -- particularly FreeBSD-- running on top of XNU (a hybrid Mach 3.0 microkernel with big chunks of the monolithic BSD kernel embed
