If memory serves, IBM's PL1 used to insert missing punctuation that it (the compiler) felt was missing. This wasn't particularly well thought out and often caused problems that were very difficult to debug. I used to think of it as 'doing m

Only people with money think that 10.00 is not a lot of money. 120.00 a year could be a significant chunk of the target's disposable funds. If don't have money then it might as well be 400.00. On the other hand, 12.00 or 24.00 a year might

A little more effort and patience to wait for paper made from newsprint. It isn't white, but who cares about that. Otherwise works just as well. Typically thinner, but lasts just as long as any of the other offerings. Watch out for paper th

As a diabetic (something few of the posters seem to be) I find this discussion quite interesting if a little wrong in some of its assumptions. The first is the idea that turning off the pump will cause the wearer to expire. In most cases, n

I have no problem with targeted ads excepting one. Many of the categories have no product! Lots of software related thingys, but nothing I can look at :( Many of the magazines that I still subscribe to at least have adds that allow me to fa

Lots and lots of talk about 'good', very, very little talk about elegant. Not to mention the ridiculous remarks about XOR. I find more often than not that those who have never at lest dabbled their hands in assembler tend to miss a number o

Interesting take---not at all what I expected from the title. The notion seems to be to preserve competition rather than running from one side of the boat to the other. I'm not sure that 2 makes for sufficient competition, but it certainly

Would have liked to have seen some sort of indicator of gross subject---tech this way pop-culture this way etc. Don't know if the data lends itself to an axial arrangement, but if so, that would be useful. Interesting none the less...

Most of my work in the last 8 years or so involves 'glue' or 'connections'. That is take two (or more) boxes and hook them together into a pipeline. Not sure if that qualifies one way or the other. The work certainly didn't exist before but

I kept think of Hardy's 'Mathematicians Apology' as I read this. Clearly one is a book the other is a blog, but they felt much the same to me. Enjoyed both.

I'm not sure about Stanford, but much of the information that MIT would impart is available on-line for free. Cherry-pick the course offerings and fold them into what ever program you are currently attending. Ultimately none of the 'paper'

I love it when a post on HN shows up a day after a mid-morning brunch based rant about the subject at hand. It was my observation during the discussion that if you take away all of the shiny toys that attend what passes for web development

I understand that age (lower in this case) is not a barrier to talent and that we in general seek talent. That said, why do we allow misogynist behavior? If these wunderkind were our children (of any age) these sort of actions would be curb

Now had the Lucas camp thought to negotiate a license with royalty (smallish) then all this time they would have been making money instead of paying for one loss after another. Not to mention damage to their fan base.
